The Washington National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic 1 (NE S WFSE Trades) to join their team. POSITION PURPOSE The primary purpose of this Maintenance Mechanic 1 (NE S WFSE Trades) position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology. In conjunction with our Mission Statement, these values link this position to our purpose as a Center: Commitment to Research Teamwork Accountability - Productivity Communication Under the general supervision of the Manager of Program Operations, this Maintenance Mechanic 1 (NE S WFSE Trades) position exists to provide support for Primate Center Units. This support includes the transportation of equipment, supplies, and materials along with the regulatory compliant transportation of regulated species (Nonhuman Primates) between Primate Center Facilities. This position also provides assistance to the Primate Center's Welder Fabricator and Maintenance Mechanic Lead in performing the maintenance and repair of Primate Center equipment and facilities as well as providing escort and assistance to UW Facilities Trades and outside vendors in the Primate Center areas. This position performs an essential function of maintaining facilities and equipment to appropriate standards to ensure that nonhuman primates (NHPs) used in research at the WaNPRC are housed in proper environments. This position requires the ability to operate welding and fabrication equipment, and to operate, maintain, and repair facilities, machinery and equipment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Maintenance (General, Preventative, Animal Housing) - 60% Perform skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction of buildings, grounds, machinery, facilities and equipment at the HSC I Wing, G/H Wing and the RR Wing. Assist with regular maintenance, operation and repair of electrical, plumbing, elevator, caging, HVAC and lighting in our facilities. Inspect physical facilities requiring skilled trades or mechanical work. Diagnose/troubleshoot problems and coordinate with trade/journeymen level workers to work at the Center. Troubleshoot/repair any problems prior to setting up service call. Obtain quotes and schedule work. Lead, supervise, escort, assist journeymen level tradesmen working at the Center and instruct them on proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to wear for safety. Assist in the transport and light repair on animal caging. Lead, escort and assist with the repair of windows, doors, screens, floors, floor coverings and painted surfaces. Escort, supervise and lead electrical engineers in the repair of connections, switches, circuits, thermostats and valves. Consult with supervisors on project requirements, manpower and estimates. Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on all types of mechanical equipment at the Center such as elevator, water filters, cages, lighting and HVAC problems. Coordinate any repairs or work in the facility to Physical Plant and outside tradesmen/contractors. Supervise, escort and assist Physical Plant and contractors when they enter any of our facilities. Troubleshoot/repair any problems prior to setting up service calls. Escort, assist and supervise weekly Pest Control Service. Escort, lead and assist in testing of equipment such as fire alarms, smoke detectors, eyewash and emergency shower testing. Assist in the transport and light repair on animal caging. Operate hand and power tools in a skilled manner. Install and maintain any testing equipment and housing apparatus. Assist with cage placement in animal colony rooms. Install/maintain water filters and water lines in all animal rooms at the Center. Count/maintain caging and equipment. Daily meeting with Colony Manager to discuss current and future projects regarding the Colony. Proactive IACUC/AAALAC Facilities/Equipment Repairs/Service - 10% Assisting Maintenance Mechanic Lead and Welder Fabricator in the repair and maintenance of animal housing enclosures and Primate Center equipment. Will use hand tools and small power tools in facility as appropriate. Will assist with coordinating equipment moves out of facility to bring to shop or location for repair and will assist with repair in order to return equipment to service quickly. Broken and bent metal pieces, plexiglass, replace casters, replace water lines and manifolds - type of damage and repair requires different specialties (mechanic/welder). Proactively identify Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) deficiencies/issues at the Center. Troubleshoot/identify issues and coordinate with UW Physical Plant and Journeymen/contractors on all IACUC and AAALAC projects. Obtain quotes from vendors/Physical Plant. Schedule, escort, assist and supervise journeymen/contractors or UW Physical Plant while working at the Center. Assist project managers in selection of equipment and material used in AAALAC and IACUC projects such as lighting, doors, water line placement and environmental controls (sensa phone/thermostats). Inspect final completed projects. Alterations and Renovations - 10% Attend planning meetings, give input on equipment and space. Assist with project layout, direction and inspect any work being performed. Assist in the ordering of equipment, measuring footprint, power, etc. Install equipment and furniture. Act as a project lead for assigned job order work of a complex nature. Obtain estimates from outside contractors. Assist with the scheduling and set up. Recommend different repairs and consult with supervisors on project requirements. Act as a liaison between the WaNPRC and Capital Projects during facilities renovations. Assist with the design of alteration projects, plumbing, lighting, caging renovations. Surplus Equipment/Storage/Transportation - 10% Monitor Inventory levels of general Primate Center supplies (PPE, cleaning chemicals, laundry service. Responsible for the storage and surplus of equipment at the WaNPRC. Reallocation of materials and equipment between facilities as needed on daily/weekly basis. Evaluate non asset-tagged material for retention or surplus and process accordingly. Coordinate all transports to Repair Shop and track timely completion. Provide logistical support for Primate Center Lab Managers, Principal Investigators and Colony Staff to identify, maintain, move and store equipment. Coordinate with UW Surplus Office equipment and items for transport. Transport surplus equipment to UW Surplus Department. Ensure proper paperwork is completed for Surplus. Other Duties - 10% Transportation of animals between Primate Center Facilities Drives and maintains the vehicles used in transportation. Will drive a 20' box truck with on board lift - previous maintenance mechanic was responsible for moving equipment between facilities and off-site locations. Current maintenance mechanic lead has an alternative work schedule that does not work with transportation needs. Transportation of equipment and materials between animal housing facilities and offsite locations (Ballard Shop and Western Facility). Schedule and take items to Surplus - requires truck and is located at facilities building. Track and report location/disposition changes in Capital Assets. Escort of UW trades, UW IT and outside vendors within Primate Center Facilities and provide assistance as needed. This position works a different time schedule than the maintenance mechanic lead which allows for greater flexibility of escorting the trades through facility. Create and submit purchase requests to maintain optimal inventory levels. Drive service truck assisting with the transportation of caging and equipment between facilities. Assist with inventory at storage facility relocating items to multiple locations. Pick up emergency items needed at multiple facility locations. Stay current on required training. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS High school graduation or GED equivalent; OR, six month's full-time related vocational study or training; OR, six months' applicable work experience; AND, one year's full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-time status in a union, OR four years applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and good driving record is required. Ability to work effectively and with sensitivity and discretion in animal model research setting. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with a diverse staff and with research investigators. Proficient in Microsoft Office software suite. Certificate in Welding fabrication and blueprint reading, specialized training in animal caging. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Independently identify and initiate maintenance work to meet adequate facility standards. Must maintain union membership with WFSE Skilled Trades. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment. This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an ABSL-3 containment facility may be required.
