Position Type: TransportationDate Posted: 1/24/2025Location: Transportation CenterTRANSPORTATION MECHANIC This position is _____ exempt or ___X____ non-exempt PRIMARY FUNCTION: Works closely with the head mechanic in the diagnosis and repairs of school board equipment (autos, light and heavy duty trucks, buses, and other various equipment). Works closely with head mechanic in the ordering and control of parts. Schedule vehicles for repairs and maintain proper paperwork. REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Professional attitude and good communication skills. High school diploma or equivalent with three years of experience in trouble-shooting and repairs of autos, light and heavy duty trucks, and buses. Need to have formal training in the operation of gas and diesel engine repairs as well as repairs to various components (transmissions, braking systems, drive train components, electrical components, and wiring). Able to diagnose problems with computerized automotive systems and make repairs. Must have state inspection license and a valid driver's license in the state of Virginia, CDL approved. Will have one year to complete all requirements. Must have a good understanding of Virginia school bus rules and laws pertaining to the safe operation of transporting students. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Knowledgeable of the overall repair operation in the school bus garage. Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program for school board vehicles and buses. Determine and complete repairs to equipment. Recommend tools, supplies and replacement of equipment. Assist with outside maintenance and repairs of school board equipment. Update and maintain accurate records and files of school board equipment. Road test vehicles after repairs. Help in the ordering of parts; procuring supplies, materials and parts from local and other sources, as well as being familiar with the use of the computer system assigned to the parts department. Be knowledgeable of the various parts purchases on daily basis. Keep very close records on the state inspection stickers as well as keeping proper amount of supplies on inventory. Make monthly reports on usage and materials. Enforce cleanliness of work areas to include work bench and shop area. Make sure safety practices are used at all times. Secure garage area on a daily basis (make sure alarm system is properly working and activated every evening). Respond to alarm system when activated. Perform service calls on evenings, weekends, and holidays for disable vehicles and buses. Work in the shop in various jobs when shop staff is low due to sick leave or annual leave or when work load is great. Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Transportation. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve months. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan. EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of certificated personnel.
