The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Product Sales & Leasing Division. Product Sales are at the forefront of the DNR's mission of implementing the DNR's policies by supporting the region's office and field staff to produce, deliver, and administer timber sales in a manner that maximizes revenue generation while effectively implementing the HCP procedures while balancing economic, social, and ecological objectives. This position directly impacts the bottom line of DNR's Product Sales & Leasing Division's (PSLD) timber sale program through added revenue generation and quality control. This position leads a statewide special products effort to identify and set up potential red cedar salvage and hardwood-focused sales. This position negotiates, plans, and schedules with region timber sales staff to offer unique bidding opportunities for purchasers interested in special forest products across the state. Effectively maintains and creates relationships with our purchasing community to market special forest products and improve auction results. This position is the agency's subject matter expert on all red cedar salvage and hardwood-focused timber sale design, layout, and marketing. This position will represent the department of the Washington State Hardwood Commission. It may be called upon to speak in front of the board of natural resources on all matters relating to special wood products. This position assists regional timber cruising staff and will communicate with all regions regarding timber cruising deliverables. This position will also assist the Marketing Manager position with statewide timber cruising training opportunities for all DNR staff. This position will act as a division field representative on all matters of contract harvest and will approve or deny all payment reduction requests from purchasers and offer quality control suggestions to region staff and contractors.Responsibilities: * Primary Red Cedar Salvage Program Specialist * Primary Specialty Forest Products Specialist * Regional Cruising Support and Division Presales Assistance * Contract Harvest Support and Division Representative Required Qualifications: * Associate's degree in forestry or closely related Natural Resource field AND at least 2 years of professional experience in a natural resource position. OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. * Experience creating and modifying highly complex spreadsheets or datasets to meet different project needs. * Understanding of current forest management objectives and timber management planning. * Knowledge of and experience in applying principles and practices of the forestry profession (i.e., fundamentals of silviculture, markets and forest economics, cruising methods, sale layout, logging methods, forest engineering, recreation and multiple use, forest inventory, water quality and fisheries management and watershed management). * Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices. * Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed. * DNR Core Competencies: * Personal Accountability * Value Others * Compassionate Communication * Inspire Others * Commitment to Excellence Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment: * Remote work, field work, and working in all weather conditions. The position is assigned to the Natural Resource Building in Olympia and will operate across all DNR regions. * Will travel to all DNR regions to assist with cruising needs, specialty forest product marketing, and contract harvest efforts and this may result in overnight stays on per diem. Travel may be required outside normal working hours or on weekends on a monthly frequency. * A valid unrestricted driver's license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. Desired Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in natural resources, forest management, forest operations, or silviculture specific to forestry in the Northwest USA. * Experience working with specialty forest products, hardwood log sales, and cedar salvage. * Possesses detailed knowledge of red cedar salvage procurement and other high-quality forest products. * Experience practicing forestry and silviculture tasks involved in the management of State trust lands.
