Job Description General Overview: Under administrative direction; provides clinical and administrative veterinary care to all animals in the custody/control of Summit County Animal Control. Performs other related duties as required. Required Qualifications: Any combination of training or work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below. -Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited college or university. -License to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Board (license must be maintained during employment). -License to purchase, store and dispense drugs (license must be maintained during employment). -Valid State of Ohio vehicle operator's license. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of veterinary medicine protocols; federal and state rules and regulations; County ordinances*; safety practices and procedures*; medical technology; emergency animal medical methods; laboratory procedures; departmental policies and procedures*; government standards and processes; data processing techniques; public relations. Thorough knowledge of health care management practices for kennel/shelter animals; general office practices; computer operation and application. Ability to define problems, establish the facts and draw valid conclusions; react calmly and quickly in crisis situations; write and interpret extensive medical and technical related reports; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; prepare and maintain accurate documentation; communicate effectively; use hands skillfully in performance of duties; demonstrate physical fitness, dexterity and ability to lift 50 to 70 pounds. * Indicates developed after employment. Job Duties: The duties listed below are intended to depict tasks performed by this classification. Perform all clinical veterinary care including but limited not to completing daily rounds to exam all animals housed in the Summit County Animal Control Facility to determine needed treatment, conduct and interpret tests, provide diagnoses, treat/care for wounds and/or conditions/illnesses and prescribe further treatment (including medications); perform spay and neuter pre-surgical examinations, surgery and post-surgery examinations including pediatric sterilizations; perform other additional surgical functions determined medically necessary. Monitor medical evaluations to ensure all laws pertaining to the practice of veterinary medicine are properly followed within the Animal Control Facility. Evaluates and recommends implementation and protocols of disease control, sanitation and herd health management. Assist in establishing, implementing and monitoring of effective medical quality control standards. Maintain safe and proper storage, handling, inventory control and documentation of all drugs utilized in the Animal Control Facility. Provide consultation, training and instruction to staff in animal care, pre- and post-procedural surgical care and any other pertinent medical issues or changes in protocols. Provide off-hour veterinary care as needed including consultation by phone with staff. Licensed Veterinarian by OVMB Lic to purch, store dispense by DEA Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. Some evening and weekend work hours may be required.
