The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking a Regional Fish Management Supervisor to lead fish management programs across 31 counties in Northwest Iowa. This key leadership position oversees fisheries operations, habitat improvements, public engagement efforts, and statewide programs with an eye toward protecting Iowa's aquatic resources and enhancing recreational fishing opportunities. What You'll Do: As the Northwest Regional Supervisor, you'll manage fish populations in some of Iowa's most valuable natural lakes and rivers, working to ensure healthy fisheries and quality angling experiences for residents and visitors. Your role will involve both regional oversight and statewide leadership responsibilities. Key duties include: Regional Leadership & Operations + Oversee fish management programs in a diverse 31-county region, including population assessments, habitat restoration, fish stocking, public outreach, and permit reviews. + Supervise seven full-time staff members, including Fisheries Biologists, Technicians, and seasonal staff. Develop work plans, set performance goals, and provide mentorship to ensure high-impact results. + Prepare and submit annual operational reports summarizing fish management activities such as habitat improvements, fish renovations, fish kill investigations, and community outreach efforts. + Conduct field inspections to evaluate the effectiveness of fish management strategies and ensure compliance with best practices. + Manage the region's $1 million annual budget, prioritize spending for operations, habitat projects, and capital improvements, and coordinate equipment and facility maintenance. + Public Engagement & Outreach - promote recreational fishing and conservation efforts through a robust public outreach program: + Collaborate with local governments, conservation groups, and community leaders to develop urban fishing opportunities, particularly in Sioux City, Fort Dodge, and Mason City. + Engage with anglers, stakeholders, and community groups through public meetings, fishing clinics, media interviews, and social media content. + Deliver presentations at conferences and workshops to promote fisheries conservation and share best practices with peers. + Serve as a key liaison to local fisheries-related organizations, fostering collaboration and support for Iowa's fisheries programs. Statewide Leadership Roles + Missouri River Natural Resources Management: + Represent Iowa on the Missouri River Natural Resources Committee (MRNRC), collaborating with state and federal agencies to manage fish and wildlife resources. + Participate on the Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee (MRRIC) as Iowa's primary or alternate representative. + Lead efforts to address Missouri River fisheries challenges, including habitat restoration and fish passage projects. + Fisheries Permit Review Team Leader: + Manage the DNR's permit review process, ensuring that projects impacting aquatic resources meet environmental standards. + Coordinate with internal and external partners to assess permit applications and recommend mitigation strategies when necessary. + Undesirable Fish Removal Program Administration: + Oversee Iowa's statewide fish removal contracts, coordinating with Fisheries Biologists and contractors to manage undesirable fish populations. + Prepare bid solicitations, review contracts, and track payments to ensure compliance with contract terms.
