Aquarium of Niagara Veterinarian Description This leadership position reports to the President and CEO. This position requires a dedicated individual who will supervise and carry out husbandry medical procedures for the entire animal collection at Aquarium of Niagara. The Veterinarian will be responsible for implementing all animal care and health policies to the highest AZA and veterinary standards. The Veterinarian will develop and implement procedures including but not limited to preventative medicine, standard and specialty quarantines, post-mortem examination, microscopic exam, environmental enrichment, nutrition, progressive treatments, epidemiology, zoonosis controls, pest control, and regulations for housing and shipping. The priorities for this position include attention to animal health and wellbeing, familiarity with AZA and AAZV guidelines, and strong leadership and communication abilities. Essential Responsibilities * Lead Aquarium of Niagara's Veterinary Services department. * Provide veterinary services for the Aquarium, including standard animal medical attention, provision of emergency care of animals, maintenance of records, and coordination of veterinary aspects of animal transport. * Deliver clinical services during weekly rounds as well as on-call emergency services. * Serve as authorizing veterinarian for establishment of accounts with veterinary supply and drug companies. * Work with Zoological Operations to determine treatment plans and triage individual cases. * Establish and monitor all policies and procedures relating to animal health. Update SOPs as deemed necessary and within scope of work. Advise on and collaborate in regular updating of nutritional programs, husbandry care, animal wellbeing, and zoonotic disease prevention. * Implement the preventative medicine program to include parasite surveillance procedures and control, immunization, infectious diseases screening, birth control, humane euthanasia standards, and regular physical examinations. * With the Registrar and Animal Health Manager, regularly maintain and update the medical records (ZIMS) including diagnosis, prescribed treatment and medications, and other relevant data, and manage the animal identification system in coordination with the Zoological Operations team. * Monitor disease prevalence within the collection. * Implement and monitor approved collection diets to assure that nutritional requirements are being met. * Conduct necropsies on animals as to cause of death, disease surveillance, and clinical research requirements. * Represent the Aquarium and promote staff, professional, and public education through speaking engagements and conferences. * Conduct and publish clinical research projects in peer-reviewed scientific journals to further scientific knowledge and the mission of the organization. * Support and take an active role in AON conservation and research initiatives. * Participate in long- and short-range departmental planning through regular managers meetings as well as Animal Wellbeing Committee meetings. * Special projects and duties as assigned by the President and CEO. * Requested Requirements * A DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited institution. * New York Veterinary License or ability to obtain within 90 days. * USDA category II Accreditation or ability to obtain accreditation within 90 days. * DEA Registration certificate for the use of controlled substances. * ACZM board eligibility or certification, preferred. * Minimum of 2-3 years' experience as a veterinarian, preferably in a zoo or aquarium setting. * Completion or pursuit of an internship and/or residency in exotic/aquatic/zoo medicine. * Experience with the medical care of pinnipeds, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates * Demonstrated ability to thrive as an independent veterinarian and seek external counseling when needed. * Positive attitude and strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills. * Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekend/evening hours, and on-call as needed. * Willingness to train and mentor growing veterinary services and zoological operations teams. * Preferred: Research experience and strong publication/presentation record * Preferred: SCUBA certification or ability to pass a swim test Working Conditions * Must be able to walk, stand, sit, knee, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull bend, and climb stairs and ladders. * Must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds, work on un-even and slippery surfaces, withstand temperatures of hot and cold, and sit/stand for long periods of time when necessary.
