This is a non-exempt position, which is manual skilled work in the care and maintenance of water lines, meters and all other aspects pertaining to a water distribution system. The work involves the operation of heavy equipment and tools, which are needed to make repairs to waterlines. Work is usually performed under the direction of a higher classification; however, constant supervision is not necessary for familiar tasks, which can be performed without difficulty. Position requires wearing a pager and employee is subject to call outs at anytime. Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. Installs, maintains, and repairs various water lines, water meters, and fire hydrants. Performs a variety of preventive maintenance tasks on wastewater systems, manholes, and other water/wastewater equipment and systems. Assists in the daily maintenance and cleaning of lift stations. Operates various mechanical equipment used in maintenance and repair of water and wastewater lines and operates various heavy equipment as needed. Performs mechanical repairs at water and wastewater plants as needed. Performs related work as required and as directed. Knowledge of the essential functions and operations of water and wastewater systems. Knowledge of proper maintenance and repair procedures for water and wastewater utilities systems. Knowledge of proper sanitation procedures for water main repairs. Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety procedures. Skill in written and verbal communication. Ability to operate equipment used for repair of water and wastewater lines and water meters including backhoes, sewer cleaning trucks, forklifts, and other pertinent equipment. Ability to understand and follow instructions and complete work assignments correctly and efficiently. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions. Ability to install, maintain, and repair lines, water meters, and fire hydrants. Ability to perform various backflow preventive duties. Ability to read and understand blueprints and as-built drawings. Ability to work a flexible work schedule and assist in the coverage of callouts. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other city employees, department officials, and the general public. DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 1 years of experience in water distribution system maintenance and operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Licenses and Certifications: Valid State of Florida Commercial driver's license. Water Distribution Technician Level III license by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. This is a designated "Recovery" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
