Park Ranger positions assist in the management or operation of a resource-based, open-space, or regional park; drive pick-up trucks, four-wheel drive, and other park utility vehicles in patrols of assigned park areas; design and conduct interpretive programs on the cultural, natural, and historical features of various City parks; design and prepare exhibits and publications; perform general park maintenance, trail maintenance, and habitat restoration projects; monitor park usage; enforce park policies and regulations; issue citations; assist in planning, monitoring, and implementing special events; train, direct, and evaluate the work of contracted labor crews and volunteers; serve as a liaison and conduct presentations to community groups, other City departments, other agencies, and the public regarding park facilities, services, and improvements; prepare reports; and perform other duties as assigned. NOTES: * Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increase: 5% effective 7/1/25 * Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). * The list established for these positions may be used to fill full-time, half-time, and/or limited, hourly vacancies. * The list established for these positions may be used to fill vacancies for open-space, shoreline, and other areas as necessary. * Park Ranger employees may work unusual shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. * Park Ranger positions may include duties that involve hiking long distances and lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds. * Park Ranger employees must wear standard apparel as prescribed. Costs for the initial uniform will be reimbursed to the employee after completion of the probationary period and attainment of permanent status as a Park Ranger. * Park Ranger employees MUST possess the following within six months from the date of hire: Completion of a valid California Penal Code 832 Powers of Arrest course (or equivalent, if out-of-state); and a valid CPR/First Aid Certificate. * In accordance with California Public Resources Code section 5163, all persons holding Park Ranger positions must get tested for tuberculosis (TB) when hired and every four years thereafter as a condition of continued employment. You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated. EDUCATION: Associate's Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 60 semester/90 quarter). NOTE: * Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units. EXPERIENCE: One year of full-time experience assisting in administrative, professional, technical, or investigative work in ONE of the following: * Resource management, protection, habitat restoration, and use of resource-based, open space, or regional parks. * Writing, presenting, or conducting educational programs, natural, historic, or cultural interpretive programs. * Enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations. NOTES: * Experience maintaining park grounds is NOT qualifying. * City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered. LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire. HIGHLY DESIRABLE: * Resource management experience in trail maintenance and/or habitat restoration. * Knowledge of regional and cultural history. * Experience enforcing regulations and issuing citations. * Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, which may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
