The Position An 8% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2025. The City of Ontario's Parks and Maintenance Department is responsible for ensuring the City of Ontario's roads are maintained. The Department has an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in serving the community by playing a key role on the team assigned to maintain the City's lane stripes and street signs. The Street Maintenance Technician classification is used in several of the department's divisions, as such employees are subject to reassignment to other divisions. The Street Maintenance Technician serves as a lead in a variety of street and storm drainage system maintenance and construction activities. The duties performed include the operation and use of light to heavy duty equipment for the minor construction and repair of streets, storm drains, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and street signs. This position is subject to mandatory standby duty assignment and emergency call back. Standby duty assignments are rotated bi-annually. Please note that this is not a "driver" position, applicants should have previous experience related to street construction and maintenance. The Parks and Maintenance Department The Parks and Maintenance Department is committed to creating and strengthening community value by enhancing the quality of life in the City of Ontario through our professional services, maintaining and preserving parkland, public facilities, and City infrastructure. This includes the maintenance service programs and operations to the City park system, public grounds, roadway maintenance, storm drains, street sweeping, sidewalks and public right-of-way, tree trimming, graffiti abatement, traffic signs, street painting and striping, debris removal, and contract maintenance services. Within these program areas, the department provides services for non-structural overlays and pothole repair, landscape and irrigation maintenance, street striping and sign repairs, concrete repair and maintenance of sidewalk/curb/gutter, street sweeping and debris removal, and graffiti abatement. A few useful links are listed below, including a link to the City's 2024 State of the City video. 2024 State of the City (Video link) The Ontario Plan (The City's Comprehensive Business Plan for Development) Smart Ontario (Information about recent City projects) Downtown Ontario (What to do in Downtown Ontario) Examples of Essential Functions The functions typically performed by the Street Maintenance Technician include the following: * Sets up and operates a variety of light to heavy-duty equipment used in street resurfacing and grading, painting and signing, street sweeping, storm drain cleaning, and concrete work. * Reviews daily schedule and coordinates work assignments and provides direction to work crew. * Determines tools, materials, and equipment needed for each job; demonstrates proper use of tools and equipment. * Drives vehicles to work sites, oversees worksite safety for traffic control by monitoring the set up and removal of barricades and cones; directs traffic as needed. * Breaks out and removes pavement; digs, hauls, and loads soil, gravel, sand, cement, and other materials; cleans up work site upon job completion. * Performs storm drain maintenance, removes and replaces drains, and cleans and removes debris. * Performs field maintenance and service on assigned equipment. * Completes daily and weekly reports, vehicle inspections, service requests, and activity logs. * Assists other maintenance personnel. * May train other employees in the safe operation of equipment. * May remove debris in roadway and clean storm drains. * May remove, repair, and replace damaged street signs. * May perform emergency maintenance in the event of a natural disaster. * Receives daily assignments and tasks that may be completed independently or with assistance of co-workers. Qualification Guidelines Education High School diploma or recognized equivalent. Experience Three years of experience related to street maintenance and construction. Licenses Valid Class A California driver's license and an acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment. Special Requirement May be required to return to work during non-business hours in an emergency situation to perform work on a scheduled stand-by assignment. Desirable Previous concrete experience operating light or heavy-duty equipment.
