Job Description and Duties Under general supervision, the OC Fair & Event Center Heavy Equipment Mechanic construct, repair and maintain automotive and construction equipment. May lead workers to perform a wide variety of tasks. * Responsible for the maintenance of various equipment and, completes scheduled and unscheduled repairs as directed by the department supervisor. * Repairs and maintains small and heavy equipment (forklifts electric carts, bobcat, skip loaders, water truck, dump truck, lawnmowers, blowers, hedgers, pressure washers, whackers, concrete saws, chain saws and light duty trucks). * Repairs and maintains automotive equipment, including engines, brakes, wheel and tire service, transmission and differential service and repairs, electrical component replacement and repairs, and minor body and paint repairs. * Troubleshoots engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems and electrical systems in the automotive and heavy equipment. * Operates and performs required inspections of equipment, vehicles facilities and systems as identified. * Inspects equipment problems, determines the extent of the repairs and takes appropriate corrective action. * Ensures that all applicable laws, rules and regulations are complied with during the operation and maintenance of equipment including carts, forklifts and other miscellaneous equipment. * Removes from service and reports unsafe equipment and vehicles. * Serve as a lead for Maintenance Workers and seasonal employees in day-to-day assignments by instructing and guiding their work. * Instructs operators in the proper operation and servicing equipment to ensure all equipment is used properly and safely. * Maintains records and reports of all training and maintenance. * Operates and maintains mechanic shop equipment, inventory, tools and machinery used in the repair and maintenance of heavy maintenance and construction equipment. * Estimates, orders and procures materials, parts and supplies required to maintain equipment and accomplish work. * Perform miscellaneous minor building construction, electrical maintenance and repair work and equipment. The governing authority is a nine-member Board of Directors. OCFEC is located in Costa Mesa, California on 130 acres that include educational assets like Centennial Farm and Heroes Hall. With an annual budget of $50 + million, the organization produces a STEAM education event, Imaginology and the highly-anticipated OC Fair each year. The OC Fair is one of the top ten Fairs in the nation and top three in California. In addition to the annual OC Fair, promoters host over 150 year-round events on our beautiful grounds. The organization employs approximately 120 full-time civil service employees and 300 part-time, temporary employees on a year-round basis. The organization also employs approximately 1,400 part-time staff members at fair time. (An Associate of Arts Degree or Certificate of Completion in Mechanical Technology from a California Community College, which must have included at least 12 semester units of instruction in mechanical trades courses, may be substituted for the 576 hours of the technical instruction.) Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: * Skill in mechanical repair, adjustment, and fabrication of special equipment. * Ability to communicate effectively, read and write English at a level required for successful job performance. * Ability to fabricate, repair and make adjustments to various equipment and systems (i.e., heavy construction and maintenance equipment, gas- and diesel-powered trucks, etc.). * Ability to perform welding, install and test pumps, motors and similar equipment. * Ability to work from drawings and sketches and make sketches of broken parts for replacement. * Ability to estimate repair costs and make repairs in the field without supervision. * Ability to proficiently operate hand tools/power tools and heavy equipment (drivers, screw guns, skip loader, fork-lift, trencher, tillers, sander, band saw, airless sprayer, rototiller, grinders, tractor, power snakes, etc.) and other equipment to ensure safe and proper operations of the tools and equipment during the performance of daily assignments. * Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds, using proper body mechanics, in order to complete construction, maintenance and repair assignments. * Ability to obtain certifications for powered industrial vehicles (e.g., forklifts, hand lifts, articulating boom lifts) to perform assigned duties independently. * Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of limbs and body parts, such as, but not limited to: climbing, crawling, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, digging and handling of materials, in order to complete the task in a safe manner. * Ability to be open to change and effectively adapt to constant change in work assignments and projects.
