Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management. The North Carolina Forest Service is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, emergency response, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the100 counties in North Carolina. The Assistant Regional Forester - Forest Management position is responsible for: direct supervision of up to 2 Water Quality Foresters (Foresters II), Western Lands Forester (Forester II) and other positions as delegated by the Regional Forester; developing/maintaining relationships with land trusts, cooperating agencies and NGOs, adjoining landowners, and advisory/friends group(s); managing, coordinating the management, or ensuring the Educational State Forest lands located within the Region are managed using science-based, multiple use principles; and ensuring that all the State Forests and Educational State Forests within the Region qualify as a Stewardship Forest and any other certification programs required by management. The ARF-FM is also responsible for providing professional oversight and expertise in the NCFS total forest management and forest health programs to multiple Districts in the Region. The ARF is responsible for: the planning, coordinating, organizing, and conducting of forest management or forest health related training programs for internal and external customers; the administration and review of forest management or forest health related programs, policies and procedures, and forms (i.e. Service Forester and Ranger Training program, Fire Training programs, Cost Share programs, FPG's); conducting internal training reviews (i.e. Service Forester and Ranger Training); acting as Regional subject matter expert in various forest management or forest health program areas (i.e. GIS, GPS, and forest insect and disease); and representing NCFS and the Region on various internal and external committees and working groups. Serve as acting Mountain Division Director as assigned. May serve as lead / dean instructor of statewide and regional level courses. Serves as part of Command/General Staff of Regional &/or State Incident Management Team (IMT). Serves as Regional Operations Officer on a rotating basis. Work hours are 8:00 - 5:00, Monday - Friday. Extended times of work will involve some evening, holiday and weekend primarily for fire danger periods and times of emergency response. Overnight travel is required. Residency required within 90 minutes of assigned duty station. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following: * Demonstrate knowledge, skill and ability to provide leadership through the implementation of Fireline leadership values and principles. * Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of forestry as they apply to forest management and forest health. * Considerable knowledge of state and federal guidelines and programs relating to forest management. * Ability to gather and present information effectively in oral and written form. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees' other agencies and the general public. * Considerable knowledge of and experience working in / with the NCFS Water Quality Program. * Physical stamina to work outdoors for long periods of time under adverse conditions. MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES: * Wildfire qualifications at the Unit Leader / Division Supervisor level or higher. * Experience in Land Management, acquisition, and setting up / administering timber sales. * Experience as lead instructor for various Wildland Fire / Forest Management training courses * Cadre member for regional / statewide training courses * Experience with NCFS Ranger Training Program * Experience in water quality inspections related to forestry operations * Experience in reviewing and recommending silvicultural practices * Experience in reviewing and applying environmental regulations as they relate to forest management practices. You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. Bachelor's degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and five years of related professional Forestry experience; or Registered by the NC Board of Registration for Foresters and five years of related professional post registration Forestry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirement Those not registered at the time of hire must obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registration for Foresters within one year of employment.
