The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with 8 years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the midpoint of the salary range. Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service. Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance. Reporting to the District Director, the Supervisor, Signal PTC will supervise and assist in training crews in the installation, maintenance, and operation of PTC signal apparatus equipment ensuring compliance with Federal Administration (FRA) requirements, Metra standard plans and practices, and professional standards for safe railroad operations. The primary duties include assign, review, and evaluate the work of crews in the repair and maintenance of PTC signaling equipment. Coordinate work schedules; requisition equipment, tools, and materials; and review and approve payment vouchers. Conduct field visits to assess repairs on PTC equipment, troubleshoot difficult repairs, and provide training. Function as subject-matter-expert providing input into the development and revision of training materials including instruction guides, practical exercises, assessments, and training aids that comply with all PTC signal applications, federal code rule modifications and Metra standards. Conduct monthly safety meetings and interpret and explain policies and procedures. Approve time off, coordinate staff schedules, fill vacancies as necessary, and ensure compliance with departmental and company policies and objectives. Decide/implement staffing decisions, performance evaluations, and performance improvement, disciplinary, and/or termination procedures. Make recommendations regarding hiring, performance evaluations, disciplinary and/or termination procedures. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration. Requirements * Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering OR in lieu of specified degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted that equals four years in signal circuit repair and maintenance, or the design of circuit modifications. * In addition to #1, must have seven years of experience in signal circuit repair and maintenance, or the design of circuit modifications, preferably in the railroad industry. * Three years of direct supervisory experience required that includes three of the following responsibilities: day-to-day employee management , assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, conflict management, budgeting, hiring, discipline and/or termination. * Considerable knowledge of signal system operations and signal design principles. * Considerable knowledge of OHM's law and series/parallel circuits. * Considerable knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and modification of signals. * Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety standards. * Good knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations. * Good analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills. * Good supervisory and project management skills. * Good verbal and written communication skills. * Skill reading and interpreting equipment blueprints, diagrams, manuals, and specifications. * Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. * Ability to analyze problems and identify alternative solutions. * Ability to understand and apply provisions of labor agreements. * Ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands, and time lines. * Ability read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and instructions, and governmental regulations. * Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. * Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time. * Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision. * Must be able to operate a vehicle. * Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region. * Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends. Preferences: * PTC experience.
