Nature of Work Wildlife/Wallback WMA Under the direction of the District Wildlife Biologist and the Assistant District Wildlife Biologist, the Wildlife Resource Specialist 1 will be responsible for wildlife and habitat management activities on the Wallback and Woodrum Lake Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). In addition, this position will assist with the implementation of wildlife programs in a 10-county district. Duties of the Wildlife Resource Specialist 1 include, but are not limited to, the following: develop and implement wildlife management plans for all assigned areas; maintain the headquarters/storage building, campground and/or shooting range, roads, and other public use facilities on the WMAs; maintain boundary markings and signs; operate, maintain, and inventory equipment; complete various reports and management plans; assist with CWD collection efforts; and collect biological samples. Additional responsibilities include the following: assist with wildlife surveys and research projects that include, but are not limited to, the use of radio telemetry and capture equipment, conducting field surveys; investigate nuisance and diseased wildlife complaints, and provide wildlife damage control or technical assistance in removing or controlling the offending animals. This employee may also assist with prescribed fires, the chemical immobilization of animals, herbicide application, forest management, native vegetation management, and managed hunts. The employee must be able to operate farm equipment, vehicles, gooseneck trailers, chainsaws and other tools as required; possess good communication skills in both writing and public speaking; and possess a working knowledge of forest game management and silvicultural techniques. The employee will be required to attend agency and professional meetings, in-service training and other activities that may require overnight travel. The employee must hold a valid driver's license, be familiar with firearms and trapping equipment, and have the ability to drive a standard shift, 4-wheel drive vehicle. Work is often performed outside, in varying weather conditions, over difficult terrain and/or state waters. The employee will perform other duties as assigned. The employee may have the option of being a Special Natural Resources Police Officer in assigned areas and enforce state rules, laws, and regulations, and must be able to pass a law enforcement background check. Minimum Qualifications Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in fish/wildlife management, biology, natural resources management, fish culture, agriculture, environmental sciences, conservation biology, or a related field. Preference will be given to: * People possessing a B.S. or M.S. degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or Natural Resources Management. * People with experience working with habitat management i.e., timber management, prescribed fire, food plot establishment, wetland creation. * People with hands-on experience with game species either through necropsies, hunting, trapping or field studies. * People with farm-related equipment operation experience either through temporary, seasonal, or full-time work or through personal background. * The Division of Personnel uses your complete work history to qualify you for positions.
