Maintenance Mechanic

The purpose of the class is to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, and some electrical and plumbing systems and equipment; to perform general carpentry and minor building construction and renovation work; to provide leadership of subordinate mechanics as assigned, and to perform related work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision of Assistant General Manager. ESSENTIAL TASKS The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Installs, maintains and repairs various mechanical systems and equipment, including but not limited to overhead doors and windows, fuel sites / systems, appliances, locking mechanisms, fencing and automatic gates, and general mechanical equipment and systems. Inspects and repairs some aspects of HVAC and refrigeration equipment in designated County buildings and facilities. Performs some plumbing and electrical maintenance and repair work as necessary. Performs preventive maintenance tasks as scheduled. Troubleshoots and diagnoses routine equipment and system problems; schedules and performs routine repair work or parts replacement. Performs general carpentry work for building construction / renovation as required; repairs furnishings as needed. Pours and forms concrete; performs masonry work. Repairs roofing. Performs welding and fabrication work as needed. Provides training, leadership, advice and assistance to co-workers as needed; ensures that all work orders are completed correctly and in a timely manner. Assists supervisor in planning and coordinating major installation and maintenance projects as requested. Maintains assigned tools and equipment. Maintains accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed. Performs all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations and standards of safety and quality; ensures the timely completion of all assignments. Attends training, workshops, meetings, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills. PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants. INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires leading, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, plumbing and electrical systems and equipment, heavy shop equipment; may involve installation and testing. Involves operations of limited scope. COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving. MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires using basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure. VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in mechanical maintenance or a closely related field. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Must possess a valid state driver's license. Must possess forklift operator certification within one year of hire. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires over two years of experience in a maintenance or trade-related field, complemented by technical training. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, reaching, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. Requires climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals. SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.
