HORTICULTURE PROGRAM ASST CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Horticulture Program Assistant - Extension Services PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION Assists with duties on all agriculture projects in the County Extension Office. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Agricultural Agent and County Extension Director. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Manages, coaches, and retains high-performance volunteers; maximizes performance and accountability. Provides gardening and agricultural consulting services to backyard gardeners and urban farmers. Initiates, sustains, and enhances strong partnerships with appropriate organizations, businesses farmers, and key community leaders that support and advance the work of UGA Cooperative Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources in Clayton County. Drafts communication strategies, plans, and key messages to raise horticulture program awareness. Collaborates with the County Extension Coordinator to identify external funds and resources; enhances programs through proposals; coordinates with team members to create high quality deliverables. Represents the organization to a variety of external audiences through writing and public speaking. Reports to County Agent on all agricultural projects. Maintains an efficient, organized filing system for all horticultural literature, newsletters, publications, and correspondence including soil and plant lab returns. Participates in additional training as needed and as assigned by Horticulture Agent. Submits soil samples and plant samples to the University of Georgia lab; assists with organizing, mail outs, and client inquiries of test results. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or GED supplemented by basic clerical and telephone skills; experience and/or formal training in the area of horticulture, landscaping, gardening, master gardening, agriculture, or related field strongly preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must have proficiency in using computers and word processing, spreadsheet and/or desktop publishing software applications; must be proficient in the use of personal computers. ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard of work station. Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
