Summary This position is located at the Bath VAMC. The incumbent of this position serves as a tractor operator, and laborer assigned to the Grounds and Transportation Department within the Facilities Management Service. Responsibilities Cutting down trees and trimming branches of various sizes. Trimming and shaping shrubs and plants located throughout the facility. Moving furniture and other heavy equipment and materials for other trades. Helping other trades in demolition and construction tasks as needed. Removing snow from walks, roadways, and parking lots, etc. Spreading various materials on icy spots, and other duties related to snow removal. Changing implements on equipment to include but not limited to, removing mower decks and Installing snowplow blades, snow blowers and sweepers. Installing salters on various equipment for the winter season. Removing buckets on small utility tractors and installing plow blades on all different types of plow equipment. Drives pick-up truck or dump truck to haul wood, soil, sand debris to storage location around facility as needed. Performing preventative maintenance such as air and oil filters, grease fittings, sharpen and replace mower blades, brushes and replace cutting edges on plows and loader buckets. Inspecting vehicles and equipment prior to and during their use each day, checking radiator, motor oil, gasoline, tires, battery, and the general appearance of the vehicle. Incumbent will be expected to operate the following equipment: chemical de-icing sprayers, box sanders, utility tractors with hydraulic operated loader, riding lawn mowers, riding lawn sweepers, garden tillers, tractor drawn aerators, trailers, over-seeder spreaders, chainsaws, extended pruning saws, or other hand and power tools associated with laborer tasks. Incumbent will drive various types of vehicles and equipment in the light to medium duty range, to haul wood, soil, and debris to storage locations around the facility as needed. Incumbent's duties are assigned daily or on an as-needed basis. Drives on all types of roads and surfaces, and traffic conditions. Checks and services vehicles for the following items: water, oil, fuel, batteries, tires, lights, horn, windshield wipers, cleanliness, etc. Performs assigned tasks independently following established schedules, procedures and methods. Attaches equipment to tractors and makes required adjustments to ensure proper height, depth, spacing and spreading capability of equipment. Operates power tools and hand tools to mow grass and weeds, trim hedges, prune shrubs and small trees, blow and rake leaves, shovel debris, etc. Provides regular maintenance on equipment and makes emergency repairs when necessary and the maintenance mechanic is not available. Uses one-ton gasoline driven roller with manual steering. Uses jackhammers for blacktop or concrete, put down blacktop (hot patch) for potholes or larger areas after excavation. Performs duties related to grounds maintenance, as a tractor operator and/or laborer.
