The Facilities & Capital Projects division operates and maintains building systems, interior spaces, and building exteriors across Shoreline Community College's 26 buildings, including an award-winning automotive training center, a visual arts building, computer centers, laboratories, a student center, a theater, a gymnasium, a childcare center, a multimedia center, and the Ray W. Howard Library/Technology Center. Under the general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, this position performs duties associated with maintaining and securing the campus grounds, landscapes, and the athletic field. As part of a large and diverse facilities team, this position supports the development of quality campus grounds, pathways, and plantings. Primary responsibilities include the following: * Repair, install, maintain, and operate all aspects of the campus grounds equipment, tools, and underground irrigation system. * Operate power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chainsaws, backpack blowers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawnmowers, aerators, sod cutters, and snow blowers. * Clean, store, and maintain equipment to ensure they are in good working condition. * Operate a variety of manual tools such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edger's, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, and pesticide sprayers, etc. * Prepare soil for planting, applying bark to beds, planting and watering plants, trees, and shrubs, applying pesticides and herbicides. * Mow, seed, irrigate, fertilize, and maintain lawns. * Provide weed control, pruning, and cleanup of leaves. * Apply pesticides and herbicides to turf (lawn), trees, flowers, and shrubs. * Keep walkways clear, sweep and collect debris in shelters, collect litter and debris. * Keep walkways clear of debris and ensure all shelters swept and cleared of debris. * Empty exterior trash receptacles and triple stations (recycle, trash, and compost). * Remove snow and ice during inclement weather. * Work with arborist to assess trees that need to be removed/replaced. * Attend training sessions. * Other duties as assigned of a similar level/nature. Required Education & Experience: * One (1) year of experience, training or combination of both involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation, and landscape installation. Required Licenses: * Valid unrestricted Washington State driver's license * Clean driving record (maximum of one (1) moving violation in the last 12 months, no suspension/revocation of license for reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, failure to appear, DUI, or other vehicle-related misdemeanor in the last 5 years) Knowledge Of: * Operation and maintenance of power and motorized equipment, including manual tools and equipment. * Occupational hazards, safety rules, and regulations * Native and non-native plants, shrubs, and trees including pruning methods and techniques * Irrigation principals and techniques for installation and repair of systems * Lawn maintenance, plant layouts and planting * Best practices in leading/directing and training part-time or seasonal employees. Skill In: * Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and competence * Effective oral/written communication * Building plant rockeries and path borders using rocks and timbers * Applying pesticides and herbicides to plants and shrubs * Training hourly employees in essential job duties, operation of hand tools and power and motorized equipment, as well as occupational hazards, safety rules, and regulations * Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships within the campus community * Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet known and emergent deadlines Physical Work Environment: * Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather * Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis * Ability to read printed materials and on a computer screen * Ability to communicate in English both in-person and through other appropriate means Terms Of Employment/Salary: This position is allocated to pay range 34 under the Washington State Office of Financial Management higher education salary schedule. Salary placement for new employees is determined by the College. This position works 40 hours per week, with schedule dependent upon department needs. Hiring of this position is contingent on available funding as determined by the College President.
