JOB DESCRIPTIONClass Title: Maintenance Worker II Grade Number: 8M Department: Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste/Public Works Union: SEIU GENERAL PURPOSE Performs a variety of tasks related to collection of waste and recyclables and cleanliness of the City; including driving a pick-up truck and packer vehicles; collecting recyclable appliances and large metal items set out for curbside collection; emptying trash and recycling public space receptacles; picking up dead animals, tires, trash and recyclables from City streets and facilities; graffiti cleanup; working at the Recycling Drop Off Center and the yard waste site; and performing litter cleanups. Within general guidelines and procedures, exercises independent judgment with general direction and supervision. Weekend and some night work may be required as part of the regular work schedule. Manual labor performed outdoors in all weather. CDL Class B with air brakes required at 90 days. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the supervision of the Operations Manager. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Does not exercise supervision over other positions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES May work on Saturdays and week nights as part of the regular schedule. Drives compacting trash truck and other City vehicles and equipment. Collects recyclable appliances and large metal items set out for curbside collection. Empties public space trash and recycling receptacles. Picks up dead animals, tires, trash, debris and recyclables. Operates a forklift and performs warehouse functions. Works at the Recycling Drop Off Center and yard waste site. Educates citizens on proper recycling and trash procedures and litter prevention. Maintains accurate records of all work activities. Performs cleanups of litter by machine and by hand. Performs cleanups of illegal dumpsites. Sorts trash and recyclables. Directly supervises and works with juvenile and adult offenders. Performs manual labor tasks outdoors in all weather. Performs snow shoveling and plowing as needed. Performs graffiti removal by painting over and operating a pressure washer. Other work as needed. Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments. Performs related work as may be required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: NOTE: Tests and interviews required. Completion of a standard high school course or GED Some successful public contact experience, proven ability to work independently, or Equivalent combination of related education and experience. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of solid waste and recycling practices and principles. Ability to work with minimal field supervision and make decisions based on conditions encountered in the field. Ability to successfully complete in-service training program and an orientation period. Ability to learn to assist in maintaining small engines and equipment. Ability to perform minor preventative maintenance to vehicles and equipment. Ability to speak clearly and intelligently. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public in all situations. Ability to supervise juvenile and adult offenders. Ability to exercise sound judgment. Ability to read and write at a high school level (minimum). Ability to make basic arithmetic computations. Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and other employees. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Valid Pennsylvania driver's license. CDL - Class B with air brakes or obtained within 90 days from start date. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Requires intensive daily use of broom, shovel, rake hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdriver, drill, compressor, generator, pressure washer, paint brush, floor jack, forklift, bailer,compacter, band tightener, snow plow. Will be required to get on and off garbage truck, empty liter baskets and pick up trash repeatedly. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
