Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.Must obtain both light and heavy vehicle NYS DMV inspection licenses within 12 months of appointment. Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no airbrake restriction. Possession of a Class A CDL with tow truck endorsement is preferred.Duties Description Overhaul, adjust and repair gasoline, alternative fuel and diesel engines; inspection of motor vehicles Group 1 and 2; change and balance tires; overhaul, adjust and repair disc and drum brakes; diagnose and repair electronic fuel injection systems; troubleshoot, repair and/or replace electrical wiring systems; adjust, repair/rebuild or replace clutches; repair small engines (lawn mower, string trimmer, lawn tractor, etc.); change lubrication oil, filters and lubrication equipment; repair, rebuild/replace suspension on cars and light duty and heavy duty equipment; repair and/or replace exhaust system components;diagnose and repair/replace diesel fuel injection systems; diagnose, repair and, as required, replace hydraulic systems; use a computer to generate repair orders, complete reports, used parts catalogs; cutting/welding. Clean and maintain automotive shop/work areas; procure parts, supplies and materials; make road calls, tow vehicles and test drive equipment; follow shop procedures, safety precautions and maintain shop tools; repair, adjust or replace air and hydraulic brake systems on trucks and cars. Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Travel may be required.Overtime may be required.
