Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area.Job Summary: The Farm Worker II is responsible for plowing, planting, spraying, harvesting research plots, maintaining farm equipment and buildings. The worker will also serve as a resource to research staff, students and other farm staff on farming practices such as hay cutting, servicing equipment and working with animals, feeding livestock.Duties and Responsibilities: Assist researchers in laying out plotsPlant and harvest of various cropsTake soil samplesScout the field for weeds and insectsCalibrate field equipmentApply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizerPick up supplies from vendorsAssist in repair and maintenance of farm equipmentAssist in training students in farming practicesPerform other duties assignedQualificationsMinimum:High School Diploma or GEDTwo years working on a farm with row crops, large and small ruminantsWorking knowledge of welding, carpentry, planting, combining and backhoe operationsPossess mechanical skills to perform maintenance and repairs, on tractors, combines, mowers and other farm equipmentValid driver's licensePreferred: N/AWorking conditions:Full time 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday; occasional weekend work may be requiredWork is primarily done outdoorsOperate and drive state vehiclesPhysical requirements:Heavy lifting, climbing, kneelingExposure to different chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizer)The above list of job duties is not exclusive or exhaustive and the incumbent will be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the position.USG Core Values Statement The University System of Georgia is comprised of our 26 institutions of higher education and learning, as well as the System Office.
