The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to roughly 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon areas. Our mission is to provide safe, sustainable water services for our customers while protecting public health and contributing to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of our communities.This position functions as the lead worker of each two-man crew assigned to the Preventative Maintenance Program within the Sewer Maintenance Division. Crews within this program are tasked with cleaning sanitary sewer mains on a routine basis in order to prevent system blockages and maintain compliance with the Division's State issued Collections System permit. Staff assigned to this role are responsible for the maintenance and operation of combination jet/vac equipment used to clean sewer structures by way of high-pressure water hoses and nozzles.Work Hours:Scheduled working hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. This position carries with it an on-call requirement which includes 8 hours of paid standby time per on-call week, plus the potential to earn overtime pay at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate for hours worked over 40.Work Location:This position will report to the Public Utilities Water Distribution site at 1715 Wendell Boulevard, Wendell, NC 27591 .Staff assigned to this role will provide functions critical to completion of the following tasks:Daily vehicle and equipment inspectionsHaul materials, supplies, equipment, earth and refuse Operate and maintain a wide range of gas-powered small equipment in addition to heavy equipment for utility construction projects Assist with truck/supply room inventorySupport the crew with all other work-related tasksThe benefits of being a City of Raleigh Maintenance Technician:Qualifying Maintenance Technicians are eligible for training certifications that provide stipends of additional 12.5% to base pay Education provided to learn Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection Operator standards and earn certificationsGet your CDL! The City will provide CDL training and license reimbursement upon passing the CDL exam Duties and Responsibilities Performs semi-skilled maintenance supporting Raleigh Water with the proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks, following established safety policies, procedures, applicable codes, and regulations Operates and preventatively maintains assigned equipment and tools. Inspects and cleans equipment to ensure safe operating conditions, performs routine repairs and/or replacement of parts, and monitors need for replacement or advanced repairsPlans, monitors and reviews inventory, resources and materials needs. Initiates orders for resources based on requirements, working with contract workers and trade specialists as needed to by coordinate repairs and maintenance servicesCompletes setup/teardown of traffic control work zones and various safety equipment including trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment Performs manual labor such as cutting asphalt streets or concrete sidewalks, hand digging to locate buried utilities, loading/unloading heavy equipment, using gas powered saws to cut and remove damaged sewer pipes, installing new sewer pipes/fittings, replacing of sewer manhole rings/covers, backfilling excavations, work site cleanup, materials hauling/disposal, and additional site restoration activitiesSupports the City's emergency response in the event of inclement weather such as debris cleanup after severe storms or snow and ice response for Division facilities.
