OPEN COMPETITIVE RECRUITMENT Open to all qualified candidates. Candidates who pass each phase of the recruitment process will be notified of the official examination dates. Under direction, to coordinate and supervise the overall operation of the Burbank Police Department (BPD) Communication Center during an assigned shift; and perform related work as required. Coordinates and supervises the activities of the Communication Center to assure a timely response to calls for service by field units; operates emergency (911) telephone system; sends and receives computer messages and routes same to the appropriate destination; operates computer terminal to enter, modify or retrieve data; performs the duties of a Communications Operator when necessary; prepares required reports and summaries of Communication Center activities; evaluates employee performance and makes appropriate training recommendations; trains staff, including new employees; investigates complaints and recommends appropriate action; assists with scheduling; assists with the development and implementation of policies; may drive on City business. Employment Standards: Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Federal Communication Commission covering the operation of radio receivers and transmitters; policies and procedures of the Communications Center, BPD General Orders, and City Administrative Procedures; California Penal and Vehicle Codes, and the City's Municipal Code; BPD CAD system and related communication equipment; spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Skill in operating modern computers and related software; exercising independent judgement and making decisions based on standard policy and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; think clearly and act quickly in emergencies; maintain accurate records; simultaneously receive, dispatch, and record information utilizing a computer database system; work rotating shifts; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public; lead a work group to achieve the goals and objectives of the Communication Center and the BPD. Education/Training: High school graduation or equivalent, and five years experience as a Burbank Police Communications Operator or equivalent; ability to type 40 net words per minute. License & Certificates: Peace Officer Standards and Training-certified (POST-certified) Public Safety Dispatch Basic Course Certificate at time of appointment and POST-certified Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor Certificate upon the completion of the second year of employment as a Communications Supervisor. All required licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment in this classification. A valid California Class "C" driver's license or equivalent may be required at time of appointment. Desirable Qualifications: POST-certified Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor Certificate at time of appointment.
