The Special Officer’s responsibilities is to oversee and provide a safe and secure environment for employees and customers The Special Officer will patrol the Library’s grounds to maintain order, preserve the peace and safeguard life and property against fire, vandalism, thefts, etc. Will enforce Library policy and procedure and assist in resolving critical situations peaceably. It is also the responsibility of the Special Officer to inspect the bags and packages of employees and customers entering the building. Provide and recommend appropriate discipline for procedural violators.Patrol designated areas of the library buildings and grounds to provide a safe and secure environmentProvide quality customer service and information to employees and customersPackage inspections for visitors entering the buildingLocks up and secures premises and contents within the buildingNotify appropriate agencies and individuals in the event of an emergencyAid sick and injured persons and completes an incident report; notify ambulance when necessaryMake rounds throughout the building location and monitor security systemsWrite reports and informs appropriate departments on fire/safety issuesAbility to work at multiple locationsA High School diploma or equivalent is required, some college a plusA valid New York State Driver’s licensePrior peace officer experience and the completion of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Basic Peace Officer course preferredNYCFD, Fire Guard/Fire Drill Conductor certification is preferredA minimum of a least 1 year of security-related experience and a valid New York State security guard licenseMust meet physical and medical requirementsExtensive walking, standing & moving about for long periods of timeMust be able to confront & deescalate problems and conflictAbility to work independently and provide the best customer serviceExcellent interpersonal (oral & written) skillsKnowledge of Microsoft Word, EmailAbility to work all shifts including holidays, Saturdays and SundaysThis is a union position and the starting salary is $35,888.In addition to the requirements listed above, applicants for this position must also meet the requirements outlined by the City of New York (per section 434a-7.0 Administrative Code) in order to be certified as a Special Patrolman: At least 21 years of ageReside in 1 of the 5 boroughsNo felony or misdemeanor arrest/convictionsU.S. Citizen
