Cyto Prep Technician - Stony Brook Pathology UFPCLocation: Stony Brook, NYSchedule: Per DiemDays/Hours: As neededSUMMARY:At Stony Brook Medicine, a Cyto Prep Technician is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population and follows all laboratory procedures and protocols with interpretation of such policies as necessary to ensure proper patient care and safe work equipment. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.Job Duties & Essential Functions:Duties of a Cyto Prep Tech may include but are not limited to the following:Preparation of Cytology of Cytology Specimens: Prepare GYN specimens utilizing Thin Prep Processor and prepare non-GYN Specimens utilizing established protocols (cytospin, ThinPrep processor & cell block.)Stain and coverslip prepared microscope slides: Stain GYN and non-GYN microscope slides on automated stainer utilizing departmental staining protocols and coverslip stained slides.Equipment maintenance: Perform mandatory QC maintenance checks on equipment and change solutions on automated stainer.Receipt and acceptance of cytology specimens: Check ID, tracking forms, requisitions and specimen containers and accession and properly label specimen containers/slides using departmental LIS (CoPath) and tracking system (Ventana Vantage)Maintain safe work practices established by regulatory agencies, Hospital, Environmental Health & Safety, Departmental procedures and policies and utilize proper PPE (personal protective equipment)Must understand and comply with all JCAHO/CAP/NYSDOH/PESH/EH&S and compliance regulations and standards.Maintain Inventory control of reagents and supplies and discard medical and chemical waste following established protocols/procedure.Required Education and Qualifications:Associates Degree in Biological Science or Laboratory Technology.In lieu of a degree, prior relevant laboratory experience.NYS-DOH CLT (Technician or Technologist) or HTL licensePreferred Education and Qualifications:Two years of laboratory experience in a commercial or hospital laboratory.Histology or cytology laboratory experience.Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position is largely sedentary and requires the employee to remain stationary for a majority of the day. The responsibilities and tasks outlined in this job description are not exhaustive and may change as determined by the needs of CPMP.
