Responsible for the safe and efficient transfer of petroleum products between barges, ships, and facilities including completion of bills of lading and gauge reports. The job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:Deck must be cleaned and free of lines. Make up all tows as directed by Captain or Mate. Deckhands are to be trained to perform the following skills in addition to other skills required by the Captain or Mate.Work aboard boats and barges using pike poles, heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools for repairs, paint, thinner, paint brushes/rollers, paint chipping tools, cleaning solvents, kitchen utensils/cookware and power cords.Required to participate in any training, scheduled by supervisor.Knot tying, line/wire splicing, make up and handle heaving lines and messengers.Make up and throw heaving lines.Perform lubrication services.Properly tie off barge tows.Give proper direction and distance signals and information.Use the radio.Steering the tug.Fuel tug.Empty trash, clean heads and galley daily.Remove all garbage and clean all decks at decrew.Paint inside and outside of tug on an on-going basis.Clean heads on tugs daily.Load supplies.General cleanup of tugs and barges.General cooking and galley duties as may be required.Carry out essential job responsibilities and duties listed above with a minimum of direction.Valid Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document with OS endorsement required.Two (2) years or greater experience as deckhand.Ability to think and respond quickly to emergency situations (oil spills, mechanical failures, etc.).Self-motivated.Ability to maintain professional relations with customers.Must have physical ability to maneuver cargo hoses, handle barge lines and board vessels by use of an Accommodation ladder, Jacob’s ladder or tugboat.Must possess good communication skills by voice and/or visual hand signals.Ability to complete accurate paperwork. Knowledge of basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide).Knowledge of company safety practices.Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over telephone and/or radio.Valid first aid/CPR training certificate.Complete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire.Valid TWIC.Valid state driver’s license.Use of Air purifying respirator, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), air monitoring equipment, hearing protection, VHF radio, hand tools, tow lines, high level alarms and thermometer.Operates diesel engines, cargo pumps, hydraulic booms, cargo gear, gate valves, and butterfly valves. Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)Must not be afraid of heights.Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hoursAble to work weekends, holidays, and at night.
