Hastings Insurance is currently looking for a Commercial Lines Underwriter to join its Commercial Underwriting team! The Commercial Underwriter will generate new commercial business by accepting or rejecting commercial insurance risks based on Hastings Mutual's product and coverage guidelines while maintaining commercial business written to ensure profitability and growth.The individual in this role is a member of a team of underwriters and technicians that service an assigned geographic territory, working collaboratively to achieve team goals. This position includes frequent interaction with underwriting technicians, underwriters, and agents and will include occasional field and overnight travel to agencies with members of the Marketing and Loss Control departments.Position Location & Work FormatThis role is flexible in its location. Hastings will entertain candidates who reside within our five-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, or Illinois) to work in a remote capacity. Candidates who reside within the greater Hastings, MI area can work either a full-time onsite or hybrid work arrangement. Regardless of the location, this role will generally work within our standard office hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Hastings may consider candidates who reside in states outside of our five-state territory if other elements of their application are strong.Position Duties & ResponsibilitiesReview, approve, and process acceptable applications concerning underwriting guidelines to achieve corporate premium and profitability objectives.Continuously operates within established service standards.Stays up-to-date and knowledgeable of all commercial products, pricing, and coverages.Interprets and understands authority levels, guidelines, and additional underwriting resource materials to achieve quality metrics.Communicates and negotiates effectively and efficiently with external contacts, including agency staff, policyholders, external vendors, and Hastings business units.Assists in the training and development of new underwriters and underwriting technicians.Utilizes various systems and resources to support overall corporate objectives.Actively participates in professional development, i.e., continuing education or self-improvement.Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.Candidate Requirements and QualificationsBachelor's degree in Insurance, Business Administration, or Finance preferred, or equivalent work experience and education.Prior commercial underwriting experience within a Property & Casualty insurance carrier is highly preferred.A certificate in General Insurance, AINS, and pictorials specific to underwriting assignments are preferred, as are higher-level (CPCU, AU) designations.Demonstrated PC skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication ability required.About UsAt Hastings Insurance, our balanced corporate strategy focuses on implementing emerging technologies, cultivating strong independent agency relationships, and providing the right products to our policyholders.We seek to strategically grow our product lines and continue to expand geographically while maintaining our financial stability and innovative nature.Our talented employees are dedicated to providing excellent customer service to our agent partners and policyholders.
