Though much has changed through the years, our focus continues to be unrivaled customer service, safety, and providing better outcomes for employers and injured workers.The RoleThe Underwriting internship offers a unique opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and independent time management while gaining valuable insights into the internal operations and best practices of SFM and workers' compensation insurance. During the internship, you will learn how to underwrite a workers' compensation insurance policy and collaborate with various teams, including claims staff, loss prevention, and premium audit, to deepen your understanding of the business. You will also gain exposure to the independent agency system and marketing functions as they relate to this industry. A key focus of this summer experience is familiarizing yourself with SFM's internal operations and industry standards.ScheduleApproximate work availability from June through August 2025 (9-12 weeks) required. SFM will work to accommodate university schedules. Weekly schedule will be Monday - Thursday and working at least 30 hours per week.What You'll be doingWorks side-by-side with our experienced underwriters as they review workers' compensation applications and learns how to underwrite a workers' compensation insurance policy, learns the policy lifecycle and follows best practices.Partnering with experienced underwriters, you may assist with the following:Analyzing risk exposuresCollaborating with loss prevention, premium audit and claims staff- becoming familiar with the role each area plays in underwritingVisit insurance agencies to understand the relationships developed with SFM's agency partners.With assistance, organizes and participates in meetings to educate and promote SFM's service capabilities to agencies.Works on assignments and training modules geared toward insurance and the understanding of workers' compensation.Engages in learning about other areas at SFMs such as compliance, underwriting, and loss prevention, premium audit and related corporate functions.Assists with follow up calls to internal and external customers and contacts stakeholders as required by company best practices.Develops an understanding how to evaluate applications and effectively communicate decisions in a professional and customer-focused manner.Learns the roles, functions and responsibilities of a successful team member in the insurance industry.SFM Business Operations:Provides support to the team in accordance with the respective team procedures and practices. Within scope of responsibility, interacts with other teams to resolve business issues and provides back-up coverage to all team members when requested.May work with other interns to develop and complete a meaningful project over the course of the internship and give a presentation to Senior Management.Within scope of responsibility, interacts with other teams to resolve business issues and provide back-up coverage to all team members when requested.May attend meetings related to the industry and other team meetings within SFM.Will be exposed to and will learn about workers' compensation and the insurance industry as whole; may have opportunity to job shadow within the different areas in the organization.Meets with various leaders from around the organization to conduct informational career interviews.Learns and understands SFM's corporate culture.We're looking forEducation and ExperienceExperience using a PC and basic keyboarding skills.Students who are currently enrolled in a bachelor's program and have completed 2- 3 years of college with degrees such as Business administration, Risk Management/Insurance or Finance; however, open to all majors.Approximate work availability from June through August (9-12 weeks) required.Knowledge and SkillsWorking independently and managing various tasks while maintaining quality is essential.Critical thinking and decision making.Ability to work at least 30 hours per week.Willingness to learn and have a desire to take on new challenges.Strong prioritization, organization and time management skills.Excellent verbal and written communications skills.Self-motivated, works well independently, ability to focus on a project and project work and isn't afraid to ask for help.Strong customer service; customer-friendly focus.Ability to maintain confidential information.Good computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).Solid data entry.Willing to ask questions and genuine willingness to learn new things.Ability to follow directions and adhere to team procedures and company best practices.Must be able to be work onsite at corporate headquarters.Compensation: The base pay posted is just one component of SFM's total compensation package. The salary range listed represents the full compensation range for this position. Job title and starting pay will be based on the selected candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience, and education, if applicable as well as internal equity with other employees in the same job classification.Physical RequirementsWork takes place in a semi paperless environment within an office setting or home office setting, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopies, which requires being stationary for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and work with close vision. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
