The Role We are seeking a business-oriented Controller & Head of Financial Operations to join our fast-growing company. This role blends hands-on execution with a strategic approach to building robust financial systems and operational processes. You'll be instrumental in shaping our operating infrastructure, developing a team of financial professionals, and driving process improvements that optimize for scalability and efficiency. You will have full ownership over our accounting operations and policies, annual audit, and working capital management - driving cross-functional collaboration to enhance financial accuracy and automation. You'll design/redesign our processes, streamline month-end close, and maintain audit readiness to uphold financial integrity as we grow. As we evolve into a larger and more complex organization, you'll be the guardian of our assets while ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and security. What You'll Do: Accounting Oversee all aspects of accounting, the general ledger, and payroll Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timeliness and accuracy Partner with the FP&A team on the annual budget, monthly forecast, various expense analytics and other internal reporting activities Prepare and review financial statements in compliance with GAAP, including equity-based compensation, R&D capitalization, and new accounting standards (e.g. ASC 842) Maintain audit readiness and collaborate with Big 4 audit firm to ensure a seamless annual audit process Participate in the drafting and/or review of technical accounting positions and policy memos as necessary Treasury and Financial Operations Forecast cash flow and maximize working capital (e.g. AR aging and collections, AP aging and payment terms) on an ongoing basis Manage bank relationship and debt covenants, anticipating our funding needs and ensuring we have sufficient access to capital Partner with Legal and People Operations on payroll and benefits-related issues, setting up foreign subsidiaries for international expansion, and other growth initiatives Review and enforce policies relating to employee reimbursements, procurement, approvals, client and vendor onboarding, among others Develop a culture of continuous improvement in the accounting function and support the culture domestically and internationally, providing assistance and direction as required to improve effectiveness and overall performance Lead, retain, and develop a high performing accounting team and support their growth and professional development Drive automation initiatives by leveraging software where necessary, reducing dependency on manual processes Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance Certified Public Accountant credentials required 10+ years of overall experience, with the last 3+ years in a people leadership role, ideally in a technology or tech-enabled services business Strong analytical and solid technical accounting skills, including ability to independently analyze contracts and determine proper accounting treatment Strong leadership and project management skills, including excellent interpersonal skills to build rapport across many departments and externally with auditors, partners, and vendors Fluent in implementing and using common Finance and Accounting software (e.g. SageIntacct or equivalent) Proven ability to manage, develop, and lead teams Would Be Awesome: Prior experience in building the Accounting function in high-growth, startup-like operating environments Prior experience in a multinational business dealing with foreign currencies Familiar with the consumer media and adtech industries *Compensation Range: $200,000 - $225,000 + Bonus & Equity Join Us adMarketplace has been named as one of the best places to work in New York City by Built In and Crain's- the latter of which have recognized us the past three years straight!
