RESPONSIBILITIES The Communications Coordinator for Budget is responsible for managing communications plans, public materials, media inquiries, and research projects related to the state budget and other economic development initiatives. The position would lead on drafting and coordinating communications documents related to the budget, including the budget book, budget briefings and decks, press releases, talking points, or other public documents. The position must work with a range of budget experts to help synthesize complex policy, information, and data into language easy for the public to understand. This person will be the primary liaison between the Governor's Office (GO) communications team and the Governor's Office of Management and Budget (GOMB). Additionally, this position will perform other tasks as assigned that support the overall mission of the Governor's Office Communications Team, including duties that support the State's economic and business development initiatives. RELATIONSHIP TO THE POSITION OF OTHER POSITIONS The Communications Coordinator for Budget is under the administrative supervision of the GO Deputy Chief of Staff of Communications, or their designee. The Communications Coordinator for Budget will also assist the Director of GOMB, or their designee, during the state budgeting process and legislative process. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires knowledge, skills, and professional development equivalent to completion of a bachelor's degree with courses in journalism, English, or public speaking, public administration, or another degree with a significant relationship to the above tasks. Preferred Qualifications and Skills (in order of significance): Communications experience in state or other governmental units in either budget/fiscal policy, economic development, education funding, public safety, municipal finance or capital project planning/funding management. A commitment to public sector involvement and to public policy issues, and an understanding of or willingness to learn the policy-making process. Ability to work in a high-paced, fluid environment, providing accurate information frequently on very short timelines. Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects. Ability to interact well with agency representatives, constituents, and legislative and Governor's Office staff. An enthusiastic approach to work, to identify potential problems before they form and to offer solutions. Other Required Characteristics: Requires strong conceptual, communication, reading, composition, comprehension, interpersonal skills, analytical skills, and supervisory and leadership skills. Must be able to work as part of a team, take initiative, and meet deadlines. Must be a critical thinker, detail oriented, have a professional attitude, be reliable, and can multitask under pressure. WORK LOCATION The Communications Coordinator for Budget will work out of the Governor's Office in Chicago. SALARY/COMPENSATION, BENEFITS, AND POSITION CLASSIFICATION Starting annual salary: $70,000 The agency offers paid parental leave, military and peace corps leave, and school visitation leave.
