With an average class size of eight students, students lead research, ask questions and forge supportive relationships with faculty that can last for decades.Job Title:Carpenter AssistantClassification:Non-ExemptReports To:Senior Director of Physical PlantJob Summary/Objective:Sweet Briar seeks a person capable of independently performing maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and/or preventive maintenance. This is an entry-level position with the potential for growth. This person will be a member of the carpenter shop and will have primary responsibilities in the carpenter field but will be available to assist other trades.Position Type/Expected Work Hours:Full Time, Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; On-Call work and some weekend work will be required.Supervisory Responsibilities:NoneEssential Responsibilities:Assist carpenters in measuring, cutting, shaping and assembling wood or other construction materials according to specifications.Prepare and set up tools, equipment and materials needed for each taskCarry out general labor duties such as lifting heavy materials, moving equipment and cleaning the work area.Operate power tools and equipment under the guidance of carpenter, ensuring proper handling and safety protocolsAssist in installing and repairing structures, fixtures and fittings, including doors, windows, cabinets, trim and locks.Maintain and organize tools, equipment and materials ensuring they are in good working condition and readily available.Assist with rough and finish carpentry including cabinetwork and sheetrock.Perform repairs and patch/paint walls, doors, and trimAssist with installing and repair wood, metal, and vinyl doors/windows.Hang various items including whiteboards, bulletin boards, banners, and plaques, etc.Assist with fabricate/repairs wood and or concrete rampsAssist Contractors in locating and gaining access to facilitiesRepairs all types of roofs, roof drains and flashing, cleans and repairs guttersAssists other departments with inclement weather clean upCreates and maintains a safe, clean, and well-organized work environment including your work vehicleAssist in preparation of graduation and other college functions as directed by supervisorResponds to On-Call emergencies by assuring prompt resolution to problemsOther duties as assignedRequired Qualifications: Must have ability or have the ability to learn the followingAbility to read blueprints and drawings and possess specific knowledge of building construction and maintenance of facilitiesAbility to use a variety of hand and power tools and other equipment such as forklift, drills, sawsMust have basic mathematical skills plus good oral and written communication skillsMust have a valid VA driver license or ability to get one and be approved by our insurance company to drive our vehicles.Strong work ethic and reliability with the ability to show up on time and complete tasks assignedMust have a high school diploma or GED completionPreferred Qualifications:Experience in an educational settingPrevious experience in construction or carpentry related role is preferredWork Environment:Fast-paced and often changingAbility to perform the essential duties of the position with or without supervisionBoth indoor and outdoor environments in varying types of weatherPhysical Demands:Ability to walk a large, rural campusAbility to lift 80 lbs.Ability to work from a ladderTravel:Occasional town trips to pick up needed suppliesAs an Equal Opportunity Employer, Sweet Briar College is committed to enhancing our community and encourages applications from qualified individuals with varied backgrounds, experiences and ideas who would increase the diversity of the College.
