The right candidate possesses excellent news judgment, is a self-starter who displays enthusiasm and creativity, and is willing and able to get involved in all aspects of show production, from idea development to episode structure to editing. They are strongly collaborative, innovative, and inspire others to push the boundaries of storytelling. They are a fair, supportive, and inclusive people manager with excellent communication skills, actively fostering an environment in which great journalism can flourish and the people who make that work can thrive.This position reports to the Director of Audio Strategy.Job ResponsibilitiesSet and execute a strategic plan for the NYC NOW podcast, with a focus on driving a range of content and expanding the audience.Oversee day-to-day operations of NYC NOW, including editing scripts, setting assignments, staffing, budgets, and other resources.Lead a 2-person podcast team and work with them to generate ideas for interviews, segments, and longer-term projects.Lead communication with newsroom staff and other editorial teams around bookings, assignments, production needs, and deadlines.Collaborate with various members of the newsroom to conceive of and execute other on-demand offerings.Work with other departments including engineering, marketing, publicity, and sponsorship to ensure the podcast is of the highest quality and to increase its reach.Ensure the team is managed with respect and kindness.Invest in each team member's professional development by focusing on feedback, goal setting, skills acquisition, and career pathing.Qualifications & SkillsAt least 7 years of audio journalism experience, including producing and/or editing podcasts, and 3 years of people management experience required.Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment.Experience with both daily news gathering and longer form audio storytelling.Proven track record of being a strong leader and manager who prioritizes, among other things, clear communication, forward planning, and team empowerment.Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written.Proficient in the use of audio editing software.Ability to effectively manage several projects concurrently.Sophisticated understanding of podcasting and the broader digital audio landscape, including applicable metrics, relevant audience trends, market forces, and audience engagement techniques.Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in newsrooms.Familiarity with New York City news, issues, trends, and geography.The ability to work collaboratively with coworkers inside the newsroom and with other staff members at NYPR.Additional InformationThis is a full-time role with a salary range of $140,000-145,000 annually (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience, and organizational pay equity. New York Public Radio also offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with vacation time, personal days, sick time, and parental leave.This role is based in New York City (or the immediate metro area) and operates in a hybrid capacity.
