Organization: Strategy & Innovation Job Summary: Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Strategy and Innovation Team is looking for its next Principal Consultant who will lead the team's delivery of client workshops, projects, and training. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT Strategy and Innovation helps the company's teams make sense of complex situations and design a response that promotes impact and innovation. Our professional services lead teams through assessing complex or complicated situations, developing response plans, generating ideas rapidly, and amplifying or accelerating collaboration in the work. We deliver 2-3 medium-high complexity workshops (or projects) each month, as well as client training and advice in our methods. Our team are experts on the process of sensemaking and ideation. Other departments provide expertise in market analytics, business development, tech transfer, etc. Topics for our client work are wide ranging from research portfolios, clinical service enhancements, and medical education innovations to operations improvement, culture change, patient experience, and everything in between. Our methods draw heavily from anthro-complexity (see The Cynefin Company), with some also from strategic design. Our workshops are facilitated by crews with different roles, rather than individuals. ABOUT THE JOB The Principal Consultant leads workshops and projects including project management, activity design and assembly, client correspondence, workshop facilitation as part of the crew, and final documentation. They also translate new methods into department operations and training for generalists and advise clients on how to apply methods on their own. Qualified candidates will have: Experience leading planning and delivery of similar workshops and projects with similar methods. Experience leading entrepreneurial projects translating new or nascent methods, frameworks, and practices into operational use. Proficiency in delivering on a portfolio with many client projects with different topics at the same time. Ability to drive their own professional growth in nascent and developing fields and topics. Drive and interest in the professional field of anthro-complexity, strategic design, and collaborative workshop facilitation. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: WORKING HOURS: This is a full-time position working daytime hours Monday-Friday, with extended hours for events. Weekend events are rare, but occasionally occur. WORKING LOCATION: Hybrid requiring to be onsite for events at our Collaboration Space in Nashville, TN, near the central medical center. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: "Light Work" category requiring exertion up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and uses negligible amounts of force to move objects. SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. This position reports to the Director of Strategy and Innovation. TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES ANTHRO-COMPLEXITY THEORY & PRACTICE (ADVANCED): Knowledge of the science of complexity characteristic of human systems, and the frameworks, methods, and principles for how individuals and groups can best make sense of complex situations and respond to them. COLLABORATIVE PROCESS DESIGN (EXPERT): Create a series of activities with instructions, group configurations, reference materials, and timing where participants will collaboratively achieve an outcome in optimal time and process. EVENT MANAGEMENT (EXPERT): Independently understands the client's needs for an event and translates them to the setup of space, supplies, and technology. Leads teams of peers to perform these functions. Continuously monitors timing of event and adjusts agenda, task assignments, and roles to ensure event delivers outcomes on-time. GROUP FACILITATION (EXPERT): Leading a group through an activity or conversation to achieve their objective by navigating group dynamics and cultivating effective communication. PROJECT MANAGEMENT (ADVANCED): Planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. COACHING (ADVANCED): The capability, normally based on a specific expertise, to influence others, manage the relationship, and deliver results for a client in a professional manner. CUSTOMER SERVICE (EXPERT): The ability to inform, relate, influence, mentor, and coach with a variety of customers (support, professional, management, and executive) in a facilitative manner in writing, over the phone, and face-to-face. *This role is Hybrid with consistent on-site presence in Nashville, TN.
