GCS provides a wide portfolio of payments solutions and expertise to help businesses of all sizes save time and money. The GCS division serves millions of business customers around the world, whether through corporate and small business cards, supplier payments solutions, or financing solutions. American Express is the number one issuer of commercial cards globally and the number one issuer of small business cards in the U.S.This role is responsible for creating and implementing the external communications strategy for GCS. This person will develop and distribute relevant communications campaigns, programming activities, and content that support key business priorities across a range of external channels. The VP will partner closely with senior executives, providing strategic counsel and communications support. This person will also oversee a team of three external communications professionals, one administrative assistant, and oversee outside PR agency support. This role sits within a broader public affairs team supporting B2B communications, and the VP will work in collaboration with company leadership, public relations, product, marketing, and other teams.Principal ResponsibilitiesSupport the business goals of GCS by ensuring the development and implementation of strategically sound communications programs to deliver key messages about the business, its service, expertise, and position on important issues.Monitor major issues and company policies and practices that could surface in the media and develop communications strategies to effectively address them.Provide leadership in developing strategies to leverage business activities with the media.Represent GCS in the region as a primary spokesperson responding to media inquiries.Create strategic communications plans in support of key business objectives.Provide counsel and coaching on cadence, content, and tone of external communications.Drive storytelling & channel strategy across press, owned media channels, social media and influencer campaigns, and executive thought leadership through research.Share best practices and incorporate learnings from other American Express communications teams.Minimum QualificationsMinimum of 10 years of PR experience in managing external communications programs.Superior written, verbal and media skills.Established ability to influence and counsel executive leadership while managing multiple priorities and a deadline-driven work environment.Strong external media relations skills.An effective leader with excellent judgment and people management skills.Proven ability to craft and implement effective communications plans.Experience managing outside PR firms - keeping a team organized and motivated, providing direction and feedback, upleveling deliverables.In-house communications experience.Proven ability to quickly learn and absorb complex and technical subjects and translate material into comprehensive and easy to understand communications messages.Strong strategic thinker able to effectively shape storytelling and channel management strategies.Outstanding writing and editing skills.Experience producing creative engagement campaigns for a large/global organization.Knowledge of communications technology platforms and measurement tools.Exceptional collaboration skills and an ability to build relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.Strong attention to detail and organization.Creativity in developing and managing stories with national, local and trade press.Proven experience in managing PR agencies.Team player adaptable to diverse group of colleagues and internal business clients.Needs to be a self-starter, good project manager and able to work independently while providing strong support to the team.Business-to-business, payments, banking, and/or fintech industry experience a plus.Additional DetailsLocation: Hybrid based out of 200 Vesey Street, New York, NY.Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the U.S. is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.Salary Range: $185,000.00 to $260,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits.The above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition.
