Job Type: Staff Job Description: The AVP, Legal Affairs will provide expert legal guidance to various stakeholders across KCU, promoting sound decision-making. The AVP will have the opportunity to engage in innovative problem solving with clients across the university, as well as the opportunity to develop efficient processes and technological solutions to best serve the clients. KCU is looking for candidates that have a strong academic record, with proven work experience demonstrating innovation and collaborative work in advising clients on a wide variety of legal matters, preferably in higher education. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and the highest standards of professional ethics. They will have the opportunity to help shape their role, focused on the strengths of each team member, and contribute to the growing programs at our dynamic, graduate health professions institution, Kansas City University. The AVP, Legal Affairs will have roles and responsibilities equivalent to that of a Deputy General Counsel. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Offer legal advice on a wide range of issues, including academic affairs, student matters, employment matters, and institutional policiesAssist and oversee implementation in compliance projects and regulatory matters, including without limitation Title IV, Title VI, and Title IXCollaborate with external counsel when necessary; refine and implement outside counsel processesLead and manage legal projects from inception to completion, demonstrating innovation and efficiency in solving legal issues and improving institutional processes.Conduct legal research and author related communications on complex legal issuesOversee policy development and implementation, contributing to efficient and technology-forward solutionsDraft and review legal documents and contracts, in collaboration with other team members Qualifications: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active bar membership; ability to become licensed in Missouri within 1 year from the date of hire6+ years of legal experience, preferably in higher educationStrong knowledge of federal and state regulations governing higher educationExcellent analytical, writing, and oral communication skillsAbility to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environmentDemonstrated innovative approach to legal problem-solvingAdaptability and excitement to learn and develop as a professionalDemonstrated commitment to the highest standards of professional ethics Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
