Bernard and Lisa Selz Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator - Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York UniversityOverviewThe Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University (ISAW) seeks a dynamic, energetic, and highly creative individual to lead its acclaimed Exhibitions Department as the Bernard and Lisa Selz Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator. Founded 16 years ago, ISAW now supports an exhibition each year with national and international loans, that are accompanied by a scholarly catalogue, digital complement and that use a wide variety of methodologies - archaeological, historiographic, receptive, and ones that bridge the art of the ancient world with modern and contemporary artists.The Bernard and Lisa Selz Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator will report directly to and work closely with ISAW's Leon Levy Director. Responsibilities include developing exhibition narratives from the initial checklist to the exhibition's installation in the galleries with both internal and external scholar/curators, overseeing the negotiation of loans and exhibition contracts, setting the design aesthetic for the exhibition installation, developing public programming and outreach associated with the exhibitions, and overseeing the content and design direction of exhibition catalogues. Additional duties include managing both internal and contract staff, handling various aspects related to exhibitions and public events, and collaborating with the development team to identify and pursue funding sources for exhibitions. Extensive travel will be required in connection with arranging exhibitions.ResponsibilitiesDevelop exhibition narratives and oversee installation.Negotiate loans and exhibition contracts.Set design aesthetic for exhibitions.Develop public programming and outreach.Oversee content and design of exhibition catalogues.Manage internal and contract staff.Identify funding sources for exhibitions.Travel extensively for exhibitions.Required Education:Make your application after reading the following skill and qualification requirements for this position.Doctoral Degree in art history or a related field.Required Experience:7+ years of related professional experience in a museum or academic gallery setting, including scholarly and curatorial experience, program development, marketing, special events' planning, budget management, and staff supervision.Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Strong diplomacy, negotiation, and communication skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse community and a wide range of stakeholders; strong people and financial management skills; ability to develop, administer, and teach academic programs, with a demonstrated ability to cultivate graduate students and staff in support of their professional development and the organizational mission.NYU aims to be among the greenest urban campuses in the country and carbon neutral by 2040.
