Job Description & Requirements Specialty: Occupational Medicine Discipline: Nurse Practitioner Start Date: 04/07/2025 Duration: 12 weeks 40 hours per week Shift: 8 hours, days Employment Type: Local Contract Job Description Our client is one of the world's largest sanitation departments. They collect more than 10,500 tons of residential and institutional garbage and 1,760 tons of recyclables each day. While efficiently managing solid waste and clearing litter or snow from 6,300 miles of streets, the department is also a leader in environmentalism. The Medical Division is an occupational health care facility with a physician and nursing staff that monitors the medical condition of more than 8,000 employees. Under the overall direction of the Director of Clinical Operations and in close liaison with the Physicians, the Nurse Practitioner collaborates with on-site doctors for health and medical status assessment, and in planning and implementing the medical regimen of selected members within established protocols; monitors employees who are medically unable to work or are working on limited duty assignments; communicates verbally and in writing with employees' external treatment providers; assists with pre-employment medical screenings of candidates for sanitation worker positions; supports wellness programs that serve the DSNY workforce. Participates in case critiquing sessions with other members of the medical staff. Institutes and maintains long-term record-keeping, grouping cases by cause and typology and cross-indexing them by treatment plan and ultimate recovery time, in order to arrive at a standardized evaluation and treatment plan for particular medical incidents which occur frequently among Sanitation Workers. Ensure compliance with infectious disease protocol and department's blood-borne pathogen exposure policy. Evaluates members' availability for regular or limited duty assignments and prognosis for full recovery. Prepare case abstracts for the Director of Medical Division, Department Advocates' Office, other agency leadership, the New York City Employees' Retirement System (NYCERS), and Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). Other related duties as assigned. DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO: Conducting physical examinations Providing treatment for patients/staff. Arranging referrals to clinics for other services as needed. Providing health education to patients/staff. Rotating on the telemedicine service. Working closely with all health specialists to provide comprehensive care. Adhering to Bureau Standards for productivity. Performing other duties as assigned by the Assistant Commissioner and the Medical Directors. Minimum Qualifications A valid New York State License and current registration to practice as a Nurse Practitioner. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. Additional Info: Level I In addition to meeting the license requirement above, candidates must have three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a Registered Nurse, two of which must have been in a supervisory capacity within a hospital or other appropriate setting. Level II In addition to meeting the license requirement above, candidates must: a) have completed a Nurse Practitioner or equivalent program registered or approved by the New York State Education Department; or b) have current certification as a Nurse Practitioner by a national certifying body recognized by the New York State Education Department. Preferred Skills Specialize in Occupational health. Prior experience in public/occupational health. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
