About Clean Power Lake CountyClean Power Lake County (CPLC) is a grassroots organization committed to fostering a healthier and more equitable future for communities in northeastern Lake County, Illinois. The organization addresses critical environmental justice issues, including air and water pollution, climate change, and equitable access to green spaces.Originally launched in 2013 as part of the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign, CPLC transitioned into an independent, volunteer-led community movement in 2017 and formally incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2021. With the support of a generous grant in 2023, the organization expanded its impact by hiring staff. In 2024, CPLC initiated the development of a strategic plan centered on equity and inclusion and secured shared office space in downtown Waukegan.Currently operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the Illinois Environmental Council (IEC), CPLC adheres to IEC policies and benefits for its employees. Over the next five years, the organization aims to establish itself as a fully independent 501(c)(3) entity and is actively seeking a visionary leader to help achieve this goal.Mission To ensure clean air, clean water, and healthy soil for every Lake County community member and to achieve the self-determination of those disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution.Vision To build a sustainable community that promotes the healthy development of all Lake County communities, specifically those most vulnerable (immigrant, low-income, and working-class families), by addressing environmental racism, practicing participatory democracy, advancing self-determination, and empowering black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). The OpportunityClean Power Lake County (CPLC) is at a pivotal moment in its evolution, seeking a bold and strategic leader to guide the organization toward long-term sustainability and greater impact. As the first-ever Executive Director, this individual will play a transformative role in advancing environmental justice across northeastern Lake County, Illinois. This is an opportunity to build on CPLC's momentum, expanding its programs, strengthening partnerships, and securing the financial foundation necessary for full independence as a 501(c)(3) organization.Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will work closely with a dedicated team, volunteers, and community partners to refine and execute CPLC's strategic vision. This leader will drive the organization's fundraising efforts, deepen engagement with frontline communities, and champion policies that protect the health and well-being of residents. A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is essential, as CPLC continues to prioritize environmental justice for historically underserved communities.The Executive Director will ensure that CPLC remains at the forefront of advocacy, organizing, and coalition-building, while also strengthening internal operations to support long-term growth. This is a full-time exempt position with flexible, nontraditional hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.Key ResponsibilitiesVisionary Leadership & Strategic PlanningProvide strategic direction, refining and executing CPLC's strategic plan to align with its mission and goals.Lead the organization's transition toward full independence as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, ensuring financial and operational sustainability.Foster a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability within the organization.Fundraising & Organizational GrowthDevelop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, securing diverse funding streams from foundations, corporations, public grants, and individual donors.Set and achieve annual revenue growth targets of 10-20% to ensure financial health and program expansion.Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders to strengthen CPLC's visibility and munity Engagement & AdvocacyServe as the primary public voice of CPLC, representing the organization in local, regional, and national forums.Build and strengthen relationships with community members, policymakers, partner organizations, and environmental justice networks.Lead advocacy efforts to promote policies that address air and water pollution, climate change, and equitable access to green space.Program Development & ImpactOversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs that advance environmental justice, ensuring measurable impact.Maintain and expand partnerships with community-based organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions.Promote a data-driven approach to program evaluation and continuous improvement.Operations, Financial Management & GovernanceEnsure the organization operates with strong financial stewardship, overseeing budgets, financial planning, and reporting.Recruit, hire, and manage staff, fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace culture.Work closely with the Board of Directors, engaging them in strategic decision-making, fundraising, and governance.Candidate ProfileThe ideal candidate is a dynamic, values-driven leader with a deep commitment to environmental justice and community-driven change. This individual must be an exceptional communicator, fundraiser, and strategist who can navigate the complexities of nonprofit leadership while fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment.While no candidate will possess every qualification, ideal candidates will have the following experience and characteristics:Required QualificationsBachelor's degree or 7+ years of experience in community organizing, environmental justice, or mission-driven organizations.At least 3 years in a leadership role with experience managing teamssupervising staff.Proven success in fundraising, donor cultivation, and grant management, with experience growing organizational revenue.Strong knowledge of local government systems, legislative processes, and environmental justice policies.Experience collaborating with a working Board of Directors and engaging them in organizational growth.Passion for environmental justice, equity, and community advocacy.Experience developing and implementing operational policies, procedures, and budgets.Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver's license, as regular travel within the region is required.Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is strongly pensation & BenefitsCPLC currently operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the Illinois Environmental Council (IEC), and adheres to IEC policies and benefits for its employees.Full-time exempt position with a flexible, non-traditional work schedule to accommodate community events and advocacy efforts.
