Distribution Engineer

Job descriptionHarrisonburg is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We are situated between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountain ranges, with the Massanutten Range in sight as well. Located within 30 minutes of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and even closer to the George Washington National Forest, this area has an abundance of outdoor recreation available to its residents. Both Washington, D.C. and Richmond, VA are a 2 hour drive away. Additionally, we are the home of the James Madison University Dukes, whose aggregate facilities make them our single largest customer. We also serve a host of larger industrial customers in addition to our solid base of commercial, retail and housing markets. We service approximately 22,000 customers within the 17 sq. mile city limits and has a winter peak load of 150 MVA, operates and maintains 10 distribution substations, a 23 kV distribution system, 69 kV transmission system and 30 MW of peaking generation. . Responsibilities include:Engineering of distribution system improvementsSystem planning and project management in the areas of substation and transmission line constructionWork directly with developers and industrial accounts to ensure adequate and reliable power availabilityResponsible for distribution engineering activities, overhead and underground, relating to residential, commercial and industrial growth as well as utility relocations resulting from road widening and constructionCandidate must be knowledgeable in load management, SCADA operations and mapping using an AutoCAD based systemInvestigating and responding to customer questions and complaints in a timely mannerWorking closely with Line, Substations, and Generation crewsAble to write and perform switching ordersAble to make informed immediate decisions in emergency or highly stressful situationsExperience with GIS data gathering preferred but not requiredExcellent oral and written communication skills are a must in order to deal with a wide range of personalities both inside and outside the organizationPerform other duties as assignedPosition requires a B.S.E.E., preferably with an emphasis in Power Systems and a minimum of 3 years of experience in a utility related field.When applying, please submit current resume, cover letter and at least three references.This position is not available for remote work.Retirement System (VRS).
