Position Summary: The Paralegal is responsible for the effective and timely provision of clerical and research support services to the Staff Attorneys at the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo Law (hereafter, PCLJ). Position Responsibilities: Assess intake inquiries to determine if appropriate for Perlmutter's mission; Handle records requests, including subpoenas, transcripts, and FOIL requests; Obtain affidavits and other formal statements that may be used as evidence in court; File exhibits, briefs, appeals, and other legal documents with the appropriate court, government agency, or opposing counsel within the context of post-conviction litigation (e.g. 440 Motions and FOIL requests); Call clients, witnesses, lawyers, clerks, personnel within correctional facilities, and others to schedule legal calls and visits; Communicate with PCLJ's Mail Intake Coordinator and Director of Programs and Operations with administrative and logistical processes regarding expectations given by staff attorneys. Experience & Educational Background: Bachelor's degree is preferred and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Experience with post-conviction litigation strongly preferred; Experience working with clients in a direct-service capacity. Skills & Competencies: Professionalism and cultural competency, in both written and oral communications; Experience collaborating with people from marginalized communities; Fluency in platforms including Microsoft Office / Microsoft Teams; Maintain tactful discretion and confidentiality in handling documents and interactions among all constituents.
