Work Shifts 8:00am-4:00pm Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION Performs a full range of services as assigned under the general supervision of the Technician, Technologist, Supervisor and Assistant Director, the Director of Pathology and the Lab Administrator AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES Biochemistry SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Understands and operates the pneumatic tubes and reports any issues to shift supervisor and facilities department. Sorts specimens with appropriate labeling and identification and pick up and deliver to designated laboratories for testing. Centrifuges and decants specimen Load specimens on automated lines, sort specimens according to the priority of testing (STAT or routine), prepare aliquots, storing, retrieving and storing samples, preparing specimens for testing and or reference laboratories by loading on the automated line and or manually and delivers specimens to various laboratory sections or workstations. Ensures integrity, and transcribes requisitions/orders into LIS, prints labels, label specimens, sort and prioritize specimens, distributes to other sections, preservation and storage. Strong command and ability to use hospital/laboratory information systems and programs as job requirements with strong focus on data entry and detailed oriented to ensure accuracy. Follows standard precautions, laboratory safety protocols, use appropriate Personal Protective equipment (PPE), decontaminate the bench surfaces and equipment and does proper documentation. Adheres to infection control, safety and patient privacy protocols, complies with patient confidentiality, safety, privacy and HIPAA rule, maintains environment of care stands and work on laboratory goals to prioritize safety and care of patients. Maintains environment of care standards, document tasks as required, and respond to inquiries from patients and physicians internally. Ensure data integrity (generating, transforming, maintaining and assuring accuracy, completeness and consistency of data for a specimen inclusive all information collected, and data generated, to produce a test result) Promote safe, cooperative and professional health care environment for optimum patient care, adheres to all laboratory policies, procedures, rules/regulations, including but not limited to, absenteeism, cell phone usage, dress code and rules of conduct. Demonstrates standards of performance and behaviors and makes Customer Service a priority, treating customers (patients, visitors, and co-workers) in a professional manner exercising courtesy and tact. Ensures best customer service, answer phones calls, takes detailed notes as needed, responds to enquiries and provide only necessary information admissible under rules to the providers. Keep self-abreast with knowledgeable about contents of policies/procedures including changes/updates relevant to scope of tasks/activities. Communicate with providers, work on add-on and locating specimens, store specimens according to requirements and does proper documentation. Answer telephone calls, takes detailed notes as needed responds to inquiries and provide only necessary information to the providers. Perform supportive tasks, including but not limited to data entry, assisting with critical calls, scanning, maintaining inventory (inspecting and storage of equipment and supplies), provide supplies to laboratory staff in their areas where they are working as and when required, prepare reports, actively participates and involved in the performance improvement process of the institution and demonstrates reliable and professional conduct. Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect patient care and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or laboratory management and documents in the communication/logbook. In addition, brings problems and other pertinent issues to the attention of the supervisor or laboratory management in a timely manner, communicate issues to the providers, and does documentation. Communicate pending and other tasks to fellow workers and supervisor or laboratory management as required to accomplish tasks within due course of time for optimal patient care, safety and efficient laboratory operations. Assist section supervisors in process of training, interacts cooperatively with colleagues within the facility toward institutional objectives, performs other duties assigned and, in an emergency, and or for the welfare of patients or the efficient operation. Monitors and completes daily logs for room temperature and refrigerator monitoring, reports promptly any outliers to the shift supervisor. Performs required maintenance on the centrifuge and the pre-analytics. Interacts cooperatively with colleagues within the facility toward institutional objectives, rotating shifts and flexible in changing work hours including nights, weekend and holidays as needed. Work Aids: Includes the safe use and handling of toxic, infectious, fumes, electrical and other biohazardous substances. Graduation from a Senior High School or High School Equivalency Diploma and one year of experience in a laboratory environment performing related work as described in position; or, 2.
