Job Type: Support Staff - Union Bargaining Unit: TWU - B&G Regular/Temporary: Regular Hours Per Week: 40 Standard Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 3:00pm Building: Manhattanville Campus Salary Range: $28.10 - $28.10 per hour The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Position Summary The purpose of the Materials Handler is to process the inbound/outbound material flow from beginning to end, facilitate in coordinating the arrival and departure of vehicles, maintain the accuracy and integrity of supplies, work in partnership alongside divisions of the Facilities Operations Teams including Morningside, Manhattanville Development Group (during phased major construction), Public Safety, University Purchasing, Research and Academic Departments and couriers. All interactions will be performed in a professional, respectful, high-quality and customer centered manner in the proper dress code. Responsibilities Identifies and receives through shipping receipts and/or packing slips of Columbia University material and goods. Signs for inbound packages from couriers, checks for damages, counts items and records quantity. Receives and processes, distributes material through established standard operation procedures/policies utilizing the logistics technology and/or a manual approach. Collects, prepares and ships authorized outbound packages following departmental policies and procedures. Unloads merchandise from vehicles to the receiving platform, sorts, consolidates to pallets or carts and distributes. This labor is performed either by lifting and carrying and using industrial powered or non-industrial powered equipment such as but not limited to: pallet jack, handcart, fork truck, and hand truck (powered and non-powered, ponies and jacks). May serve to coordinate the logistical workflow of the loading dock. Works with technological solutions and/or devices as a tool to effectively accomplish a seamless operation. Performs filing, coordinates information, makes routine inspections, maintains a safe clean work area and related work materials. Assists other departments when necessary to delivery or move equipment or materials entering or exiting the facility. Notifies intended department of exceptions, i.e. heavy equipment, perishables and regulated goods. Under emergency/disaster declarations job responsibilities can be altered. Additional responsibilities might include reordering and restocking supplies in storage locations. Attend and participate in all departmental trainings and meetings. Responsible for transporting supplies and equipment short distances between buildings using a university vehicle. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested. Minimum Qualifications Ability to read write, count, perform basic math calculations. Capable of basic computer and handheld held technology use. Physical requirements: bend, walk for variable periods, and lift a maximum of 70 lbs. Ability to work in/out-doors in variable weather conditions and stand during all or most of the work day. High School Diploma and 2 years of experience working in Loading Docks or Materials Management in academic or healthcare setting. Will be exposed to noise, minimal fumes and vibration.
