Entity: Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) Department: Ophth Clinical Support SEI Location: Penn Presbyterian Medical Center- 51 N 39th St Hours: Per Diem, as need basis Summary : The Ophthalmic Technician exhibits UPHS organizational behavioral competencies which reflect its mission and are embedded in the professional practice competency domains. The Ophthalmic Technician is accountable for the provision of direct care to patients, who range in age from infancy to the elderly, and demonstrates care within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Person and family centered care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology. The Ophthalmic Technician works closely with the inter-professional health care team to facilitate the coordination of care across the continuum. The Ophthalmic Technician focuses on developing knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical, cultural, educational, safety and age-appropriate considerations of the patient. The Ophthalmic Technician's practices impacts the organization's vision, mission, goals, and the care delivery system. The Ophthalmic Technician complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies. The Ophthalmic Technician assist the Ophthalmologist with direct patient care. Completes patient medical and ocular history. Completes preliminary ocular exam. Responsibilities: Completes medical and ocular history on all patients. Completes chief complaint and allergies on all patients. Completes health screening questions including falls, abuse, depression screening. Documents all medications on all patients. Completes preliminary ocular exam including visual acuities, color vision, lensometry, cover tests, motility tests, stereopsis tests, external examination, pupil evaluation, slit lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressures, refractometry, retinoscopy, keratometry, corneal topography, corneal OCT, pachymetry, vital signs, fundus photography, OCT's, External Eye Photography, IOL Master, A-Scan, Performs contact lens instruction and insertion and removal if applicable. Administer eye medications according to protocol. Perform Humphrey Visual Field testing and Goldman Visual Fields: if applicable. Assist in work up of patients before, during and after the following, (but not limited to) Argon, Diode, Yag, and SLT laser. Prepare patient and assist with minor in office surgical procedures involving ocular injections, botox injections, chalazions, Temporal Artery Biopsies, oculoplastics procedures, and suture removal procedures if applicable. Completion of surgical, all procedures, and pre-cert insurance forms when required. Schedule MRI's and retrieve reports if applicable. Performs Universal Protocol on all patients receiving procedures. Collaborate with pharmacies to ensure patient Rx's are filled. Train other Technicians as assigned by manager. Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures. Other duties as assigned to support the department, entity and health system organization. Credentials: Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (Required) CPR American Heart Association (Preferred) Education or Equivalent Experience: H.S. Diploma/GED (Required) Associate of Arts or Science (Preferred) Skills and Abilities: Effectively engages in the process of teamwork, cooperation, coordination and collaboration. Ability to effectively and safely utilize all equipment. Ability to follow all required protocols. Ability to multi-task. Ability to respond to emergency situations. Experience in a healthcare environment. Understanding of the Joint Commission and Department of Health process. Understanding of regulatory compliance. Maintain all life safety competencies.
