The Director of Engineering for the Personal Insurance Lines division is a strategic management position, responsible for driving quality, stability, and operational excellence across MSI's software engineering teams within the Personal Insurance Lines business unit. The director will oversee engineering managers who cover renters, homeowners, flood, and other consumer insurance products. In addition, the director will manage engineering teams who support consumer-facing portals, APIs for distribution partners, and other mission-critical solutions within MSI's technology portfolio. The Director of Engineering will ensure a high standard of technical and operational excellence, advocate for a "run what you what build" mentality, and hold teams accountable for the stability, security, maintainability, adaptability, and customer experience of their respective products and the broader platform. This role is for a technical leader who brings a customer-centric mindset, a commitment to quality, and an adeptness at managing line-of-business engineering teams. Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Strategy Refine and execute the engineering strategy for high-volume, mission-critical insurance products within the Personal Insurance Lines division. Drive adoption of best practices in monitoring and observability, and advocate for a "run what you build" culture, where engineers are accountable for the end-to-end performance of their applications. Manage and report on system stability, software quality, and customer experience, ensuring the success of MSI's proprietary software solutions. Work closely with the Product function to lead the creation, negotiation, management, and execution of both product and technology roadmaps. Team Management & Development Recruit, hire, and develop exceptional engineering talent, with an emphasis on senior and staff-level software engineers and high-performing engineering managers. Manage and mentor senior software development managers responsible for renters, homeowners, flood, and other consumer-facing insurance products and services. Bring the needs of users, customers, and stakeholders to bear on team deliverables; simultaneously, advocate for a high-quality and productive developer experience (DevEx) through tooling, process improvement, etc. Promote a culture of innovation, encouraging bottom-up ideation and creativity to solve complex technical challenges. Foster collaboration between teams of US-based FTEs and offshore teams, ensuring cohesion and high productivity across all engineering functions. Operational Excellence Set and uphold standards for code quality, system reliability, and operational excellence across the Personal Insurance Lines division. Lead teams in adopting effective practices in monitoring and observability to ensure system stability and resilience. Ensure that all software engineering teams adhere to MSI's best practices for security, scalability, and performance. Qualifications Required Experience 10+ years in software organizations, with at least 3 years as a manager-of-managers. Experience in leading technical strategy for high-volume, mission-critical systems. Success in building and scaling technical teams, with a track record of hiring and developing top talent. Expertise in designing and operating resilient, reliable systems with robust monitoring and observability practices. Valued Experience Background in high-growth, consumer-facing, transactional services. Experience in insurance/InsurTech, finance/FinTech, or other regulated environments. 5-10 years of hands-on experience in software development or infrastructure engineering.
