### Position Overview: The Underwriter is primarily responsible for reviewing mortgage files submitted for underwriting. This role involves calculating income, analyzing debts and assets, and conducting a thorough review of appraisals and titles. Additional duties include entering data into the client's loan operating system and using an automated underwriting system to determine loan approvals and clear conditions for final approval. Candidates should demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and the ability to work effectively in a team environment, along with excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills. ### Essential Job Functions: - Conduct comprehensive reviews of mortgage loan files, including income, assets, credit, and collateral. - Utilize the client's loan operating system to ensure precise data entry. - Underwrite loans in accordance with client guidelines, whether through automated underwriting systems (AUS) or manual methods. - Ensure all loan documents are accurate, complete, and compliant. - Identify and resolve any red flags or alerts in the loan file. - Issue loan decisions and set conditions accordingly. - Review and approve conditions to ensure compliance and completeness of the loan file. - Provide outstanding customer service to both internal and external clients. - Stay updated on client and investor requirements. - Resolve pre- and post-closing issues related to underwriting. - Assist Processors and Loan Officers in understanding underwriting decisions and conditions. - Maintain composure in a high-stress environment while delivering exceptional customer service. - Be available to work over 40 hours as needed. ### Requirements: - Minimum of 2 years of current conventional mortgage loan underwriting experience. - Strong knowledge of income calculations, tax returns, and reading credit reports, with the ability to identify red flags. - Basic understanding of appraisals, including recognizing red flags and ineligible properties. - In-depth knowledge of GSE underwriting guidelines and automated underwriting engines (DU/LP). - Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills. - Detail-oriented with strong time management abilities. - Ability to thrive in a flexible, production-oriented environment. - Willingness to collaborate as part of a team. - Proficiency in multiple systems within a paperless environment. - Must be able to work in a strictly secure environment. - NMLS-MLO Licensure preferred. - Availability to work outside of normal business hours when necessary.
