Job Title: Custodian Reports to: Building Principal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt POSITION SUMMARY Positions in this class are assigned a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of school buildings and equipment. While the full range of entry-level skills in a particular trade is not required, the incumbent should have some previous experience and a working knowledge of building maintenance. Employees are expected to perform routine preventive and maintenance repair work with minimum supervision. Also, the employee must maintain and provide safe and clean school buildings for students, staff, and the community. QUALIFICATIONS High School Graduate or GED Training and skill demonstrated in the maintenance of school buildings, including repair of mechanical devices, electrical and plumbing items, carpentry skills, and carpeting/floor tile installation skills As assigned, skill in maintaining septic systems at schools As assigned, skill in maintaining heating, cooling, and ventilation systems ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Recommend priorities on repair projects, including estimates of time/cost for the same Examine school facilities regularly for needed repair and maintenance Establish and submit necessary records and documentation as required As assigned, maintain all septic systems in working order As assigned, maintain all heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in working order Serve as a lead maintenance person in performing needed maintenance or repair Perform general painting; painting walls, ceilings, trim work, and other surfaces using rollers, brush, or power sprayers; mix and match paints, stains, and varnishes Perform Lock Smith duties and door handing task, repair or install miscellaneous door hardware and lockers; service and maintain locks and prepare and cut keys; prepare, refit, hang or rehang doors Perform general plumbing tasks; install and make emergency repairs and adjustments to plumbing fixtures and equipment, including pipes, washers, gasket, faucets, floats, and valves; clean and repair drain lines Maintain records of tasks completed; order parts from storage or recommended outside purchase as necessary Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures Cleans areas as assigned (i.e. rooms, halls, offices, restrooms, cafeteria, etc.) vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, mops, and buffs all types, of floor surfaces. Washes windows, whiteboards, walls doors, and baseboards Cleans and polishes furniture, window, metalwork, and computer screens Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting Keeps walks, parking areas, grounds, and entrances clear and clean Receive and process work orders Washes, scrubs, and disinfects restrooms and locker rooms as well as cleans sinks, fixtures, panels, and drinking fountains Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) safely and appropriately, picks up trash, and responds to special requests for custodial and maintenance services Unlocks doors and windows, turns on lights and prepares to build for the state of day and/or locks doors and windows, turns off lights, and secures a building as assigned Empties and cleans waste containers Responds to safety inspections (daily, monthly, etc.) including playground equipment, fire extinguishers, and alarms, and completes reports of inspections and incidents Tracks and orders custodial supplies for building, keeping building principal and supervisor informed Setup for activities and events at assigned building Clean and clear gutters and roofs Tend to issues with snow and ice (clear sidewalks, apply salt, clear rooftops, protect pipers, etc.) Inspect wiring Perform plumbing, carpentry, painting, general equipment, or building repairs as necessary or requested to maintain the building effectively Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner Professionally represent the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and student Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required Occasionally perform work beyond a standard 40-hour workweek when work-load requires Attends in-service training Attends staff meetings PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
