BNL's Nuclear Safety program is undergoing expansion to address the nation's growing demand for critical medical radioisotopes, which DOE has designated as a Mission Essential Function for our Laboratory. Position Description: The candidate will serve as the senior nuclear safety analyst for the Laboratory. As part of our team, you will work in an analytical environment with other nuclear safety professionals, collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams to develop and maintain safety basis documentation for BNL's Radionuclide Research and Production Laboratory (RRPL) and future nuclear facilities. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with staff from a diverse set of backgrounds while facilitating the production of life-changing radioisotopes that have shown amazing promise as therapeutics against aggressive cancers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Preparation and maintenance of the RRPL safety basis documents, including Facility Hazard Categorization, Documented Safety Analyses (DSA), and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs). Performance of hazard and accident analysis in support of safety basis development, updates, and amendments. Performance of research, calculations, and testing as needed to validate safety analysis assumptions or controls. Ensure technical compliance with 10 CFR 830 Subparts A and B as applicable to nuclear facility safety basis processes. Application of the Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) process to the RRPL and future nuclear facilities in accordance with BNL Standards-Based Management System (SBMS) procedures. Development of appropriate documentation, when necessary, to address a Potential Inadequacy of the Safety Analysis (PISA), Evaluation of the Safety of the Situation (ESS), and Justification for Continued Operations (JCO). Evaluating proposed nuclear facility alterations against Major Modification criteria and preparing associated documentation. Engage with DOE site office representatives to ensure compliance, maintain a flow of communication, and facilitate collaborative reviews and approvals for safety basis documentation. Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to staff safety basis analysts. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, physical sciences, nuclear engineering technology, or a related field. At least three years of experience in the development and maintenance of safety basis documentation for DOE nuclear facilities (or NRC equivalents). At least two years of experience working at a DOE nuclear facility or NRC-regulated reactor. Familiarity and experience working under 10 CFR 830 Subparts A and B and the USQ process. Technical skills in applying analytical approaches and techniques used in safety evaluations, interpreting and integrating results into safety basis documents, and oral/written communication of results. Knowledge in the use of analytical methods for hazardous and risk assessment, failure analysis and radiological and chemical release consequence evaluation. Must possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Must be organized, diligent, and accustomed to a nuclear safety culture. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Five or more years of experience in the development and maintenance of safety basis documentation for DOE nuclear facilities (or NRC equivalents). Experience using DOE toolbox or other relevant analysis codes and programs, such as ALOHA, CFAST, HotSpot, FLUKA, COMSOL, etc. Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams. Ability to perform within a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks, and adapt to evolving needs. Other Information: Occasional travel to other DOE National Labs.
