Job: Associate Director, Fire Life Safety Job Summary: Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Community Safety and Emergency Response within the CARES Community Safety, The Associate Director of Fire Safety will perform specific critical functions for Barnard College's Milstein Center for Teaching and Learning. The Associate Director will provide shift oversight of the Barnard Fire Safety Team. The position's hours are 6pm - 2am, Tuesday through Thursday, and 4pm - midnight, Friday and Saturday. Staff absences, seasonal exam schedules, or unplanned fire safety needs may necessitate adjustments to this schedule. Job Description: Duties & Responsibilities: Fire Safety: The majority of duties are performed in support of fire safety at the Milstein Center, although assignments may be made for any location on campus at the discretion of the Director of Emergency Management. Work will include a variety of tasks in support of Barnard's fire and life safety requirements as well as a governing local, state, and federal requirements: Ensure compliance with the Milstein Center's Emergency Action Plan, including responses related to alarms and signals from the Fire Command Station. Direct all emergency operations, liaisons with responding FDNY and/or other responding units. Make appropriate announcements to direct actions of occupants or assigned personnel. Plan and perform all fire and evacuation drills as required by code. Develop and deliver training for roles of Warden, Deputy Warden, Searchers, and Fire Brigade. Perform building inspections on prescribed intervals, including inspections of fire extinguishers, exit signs, emergency lighting, standpipes, sprinkler systems, and other components or systems as assigned. Inspect surrounding grounds, buildings, and other infrastructure to detect fire hazards in order to protect life and property on building sites. Test Fire Command Station, Warden Phones, PA system, elevator recall, and other parts of the alarm system as required. Work may include interface with or testing of systems in other Barnard buildings. Support Facilities and Capital Projects work through the issuance of hot work permits and monitoring of areas to enforce related fire protection standards. Organize fire watch as needed. Develop and deliver fire safety training and presentations to the campus community as assigned. Enforce fire safety code requirements related to building occupancy and public gatherings. Administrative Duties and Departmental Support: The Associate Director will perform a variety of administrative duties as assigned: Create incident report information and perform record keeping as assigned related to any incident of concern. Contribute to centralized departmental record keeping, including maintenance of fire/life safety inspection, testing, and training records; certifications of departmental staff; and long or notification related to compliance and emergency management. Prepare internal reports such as inspections performed, violations observed, and recommendations for eliminating fire hazards. Maintain daily fire log and warden sign-in records. Maintain electronic data pertaining to all related fire/life safety activities and provide summary reports when requested. Perform other duties in support of department and college operations for security and emergencies, as assigned. Skills, Qualifications & Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong computer skills, including the ability to learn new software as necessary. Ability to fully utilize email, electronic calendars, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. Working knowledge of relevant New York City, State, and Federal regulatory requirements. Understanding of FDNY violations and processes. Detail-oriented. Excellent time management skills, record keeping, and ability to deliver work on assigned schedules. Skilled in communicating information to a diverse set of constituencies in a collegial, inclusive environment. Must demonstrate integrity and sound judgment, leadership and communication skills. Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels in a demanding environment. Demonstrated ability to act decisively and independently to resolve complex issues. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, members of the campus community, city officials, other government agencies, and the general public. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and expertise. Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in fire/life safety management/prevention. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, the Certificate of Fitness license F-89 for FLSD within 3 months of hire and S-12 citywide sprinkler and S-13 citywide standpipe within 6 months of hire. Preferred Qualifications : Experience working in higher education or similar complex institution. Previous experience as a Fire Life Safety Director in New York City. This is a fully in person position. Salary Range: $78,000 - $86,000 annually The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
