Kirby, Detroit MI 48202 Work schedule : Full Time, 40 hours per week Job length: 3 months - 6 months Job Description: An Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment across campus facilities. This essential role ensures a safe and functional environment for students, faculty, and staff by conducting regular inspections, troubleshooting issues, and performing necessary repairs. The Electrician collaborates with the maintenance team to support the overall campus infrastructure and contribute to a conducive learning and working environment. Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, fixtures, and equipment in accordance with relevant codes and regulations. Inspect and diagnose electrical issues, utilizing technical knowledge and diagnostic tools to identify problems and implement effective solutions. Perform routine maintenance tasks, including replacing worn-out parts, repairing faulty wiring, and upgrading systems as needed. Collaborate with other maintenance and facilities staff to ensure seamless integration of electrical work within broader campus operations. Respond promptly to service requests, prioritize tasks, and complete assignments within established timelines. Assist in planning and executing electrical projects, coordinating with supervisors and other trades to ensure successful project completion. Stay current with industry trends, advancements, and best practices to enhance technical expertise and contribute to continuous improvement. Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to create a secure environment for all occupants and personnel. REQUIREMENTS: Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program is preferred. Valid electrician's license or journeyman certification required. Proven experience in electrical installation, maintenance, and repair. Familiarity with local and national electrical codes and regulations. Ability to interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics. Proficient in using hand and power tools relevant to the trade. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Effective communication and teamwork abilities. Physical stamina and ability to work in various weather conditions. Flexibility to adjust work hours as needed for emergency repairs or special projects. Work Environment This position encompasses indoor and outdoor settings across the campus. Work involves navigating classrooms, laboratories, offices, shops rooftops grounds, parking structures and other campus spaces. This job requires troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems that power lighting, audiovisual equipment, shop equipment and various appliances and equipment. Adaptability is key, as the employee may need to collaborate closely with faculty and staff to ensure minimal disruption to daily activities. Physical Demands This job demands a level of physical fitness and dexterity to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the position. The job involves frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting, occasionally in confined spaces and at varying heights. Electricians are required to handle and manipulate a range of tools, equipment, and materials, some of which may be heavy or awkwardly shaped. Working with electrical systems necessitates acute visual acuity and color perception to distinguish wiring colors and interpret intricate details on technical diagrams and schematics accurately. Electricians must have the ability to differentiate between various shades and colors to ensure proper identification and connection of wires, components, and indicators. Moreover, the College Electrician role may occasionally require climbing ladders, scaffolds , lifts, or other structures to access electrical equipment located at elevated positions. This aspect of the job demands balance, coordination, and a degree of comfort working at heights.
