Lonely Planet is looking for an Assistant Editor who will assist the Senior Editor and Publisher with the development and delivery of Lonely Planet's Illustrated and Gift list for publication globally, including gift, general reference, stationery and illustrated books. You will help see a book all the way through from ideation, budgeting, and contracting, through acquisitions and commissioning, to editing and getting the final product print-ready by assisting with editorial and administrative tasks. This means helping to budget and commission all content (text, images, illustrations and maps), as well as assisting with the day-to-day project management required to deliver a book from creation of the business case through product design, commissioning, production, pre-press and post-production. You will participate in all editorial and acquisition meetings and be encouraged to bring your own ideas to the table. What You'll Do: Input and feedback on development of Illustrated and Gift list for global publication Help expand the Illustrated and Gift list to include more lifestyle, contemporary, and travel-inspired books and products by researching both publishing and general trends Assist Senior Editor and Publisher with preparation of pitch documents and product briefs (proposals, p&ls, comp research, etc.), along with contracts and POs. Work with Production Editor to ensure printing needs are booked and budgeted correctly Assist with commission and brief resources (writers, designers, illustrators, editors, packagers) Review and proof manuscript, images and layout to ensure they meet the brief Conduct image research as needed Help prepare content for sales materials (catalogs, blads & sales kits) Ensure the timely delivery of all books to schedule What We're Looking For: 4 years of editorial experience Product development experience Knowledge of publishing and printing industry processes & technologies In-depth knowledge of book production processes from concept to publication Experience working with agents and also sourcing and managing freelance editors and designers Ability to keep on schedule Passion for travel Compensation New York City Compensation Range: $66,000 - $80,000 *Note actual salary is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience.
