Job Title: Fleet Mechanic Location: District/Transportation Services Job Group: Non-Union Support Staff Pay Level:Non-exempt, Pay Grade 28Reports To:Transportation SupervisorSummary: Oversees a safe and efficient District fleet maintenance program. Ensures District's vehicles and equipment are maintained in proper mechanical order for the safe and timely transport of students and/or staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned) Ensures the regular and necessary maintenance and safe implementation of all District vehicles by: Performing monthly inspection on all vehicles. Performing troubleshooting and repairs on district vehicles. Directing and/or overseeing the work efforts of other mechanics engaged in the maintenance, repair, and/or modification of District vehicles. Conducting engine testing using specialized equipment, as necessary. Performing periodic road-testing to determine road-worthiness. Preparing and auditing the preventative maintenance program for District Transportation Services. Maintaining related records and reports on vehicles and maintenance operations. Analyzing requirements and making recommendations on schedule for preventative maintenance programs for District vehicles and equipment. Participates in professional development opportunities and remains current on career-related subject matter by: Maintaining the ability to diagnose, repair, rebuild, and make all necessary adjustments on all vehicle systems. Maintaining a thorough knowledge and ability to repair components on all systems, including the ability to operate shop equipment. Attending training and seminars, related to fleet maintenance, vehicle mechanics, or related topics, as needed. Providing on-the-job training for mechanic trades personnel and bus drivers as needed. Coordinates work assignments and duties with the Transportation Coordinator, including but not limited to: Inventory management and control; and sets up and monitors receipt and issuance of parts and supplies. Assigns equipment for all field trips/athletic trips. Evaluating the need for equipment and material replacement, upgrade, or equipment rotation use. Makes recommendations to the Transportation Coordinator. Ensuring compliance with VOSHA/OSHA standards and District protocols for safety. Oversees the work of the Assistant Mechanic. May serve as a Bus or Van Driver, as assigned. May perform other duties as assigned. General Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws at the direction of the Transportation Supervisor and Superintendent. May assist the Transportation Coordinator in supervisory responsibilities such as: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. The ability to work in a collaborative team environment is essential to the employee's successful job performance. Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule.Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required. Advance training in auto mechanics and experience with maintaining vehicle fleets preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must be a certified mechanic. A current Vermont CDL license with School Bus Endorsement is required. Must have no points on driving record and be able to pass physical including drug test. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively in a one-on-one situation or before groups. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and School Board policies. Mechanical aptitude and some knowledge of technology and mechanical related equipment and apparatus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical buses and equipment. The employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as, but not limited to: petroleum products, degreasers, gasses, fumes, and sprays and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works outside in various weather conditions. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud. Terms of Employment: Full Year or as specified on the Memorandum of Agreement. Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated at least annually according to the stated performance objectives and the qualities and characteristics contained on the evaluation form.
